The Medford Council on Aging is creating a book of poetry featuring the poems of seniors age 60 and over. One way to participate is to attend the weekly Book of Poetry Class at the Senior Center led by published poet Robert Castagna. It meets every Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Seniors also may submit poems at the Senior Center office, or by email to Robert Castagna at rwcastagna@yahoo.com. Thoreau: Civil Rights and Civil Disobedience

The Medford Council on Aging invites seniors to join Concord public historian Richard Smith as he tells the story of Henry David Thoreau’s civil disobedience, the reasons behind it, and the consequences of his actions. Why are Thoreau’s words more powerful and influential now than they were in 1849? And can civil disobedience effect true social change? Reserve your seat by calling the Senior Center at 781-396-6010. Dancing the Night Away in Medford

The Medford Council on Aging welcomes historian Dee Morris for a talk on the beginnings of dance in Medford, which date as far back as 1745 when Ben Parker built a tavern that featured a dance hall on the second floor. Morris will look back at the early days of dancing at the Union Hall, Medford Assembly, Medford Opera House, Pittman Academy, boarding schools, and more. The Medford Council on Aging presents an exhibit showcasing the works of participants in the weekly ARTitude class at the Senior Center led by Tom Wojciechowski. Each participant will have up to six pieces in the exhibit, which will be on view from 1 to 4 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, June 6.
