This month’s Words and Music program at the West Medford Community Center celebrates Women’s History Month. In the first hour, host Terry E. Carter will sit down with Dr. Sheila M. Nutt, one of the early members of the Pan Am BlackBirds, the storied African American flight attendants whose acclaimed beauty and charm set the standard for career women in the 1960s and ’70s. Dr. Nutt, a highly accomplished storyteller, will shed fresh light on a host of larger-than-life experiences as a trailblazing role model for thousands of women who continue to take to the skies long after she and her beloved Black sisters did.

The history-making will continue in the second hour of the program, which will embrace the musical virtuosity of cellist-conductor-teacher Marshunda Smith, the ground-breaking maestro of the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra. Last September, she became the first Black female to lead that organization. Originally from Tennessee, Marshunda’s enchantment with music began in sixth grade when she first picked up a cello. Initially sparked by a teenage crush, her passion quickly evolved into a genuine love for the instrument.

The West Medford Community Center launched Words and Music in 2017.
