Tufts Falls Festival of Plays: Smart People

Friday, November 13, 2020 @ 7:00 am

Free

The Tufts University Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies concludes its Fall Festival of Plays, three staged readings directed by Maurice Emmanuel Parent and presented in a streaming format. The works explore systemic racism, class divisions, and politics, which the department hopes will provide a jumping-off point for ongoing conversations about the role of theatre in community transformation.

Opening today is “Smart People,” which may be viewed through November 19. Written by Lydia R. Diamond, “Smart People” premiered at the Huntington Theatre in Boston in May 2014 under the direction of Peter DuBois. It is the eve of Barack Obama’s first election. Four of Harvard University’s brightest — a surgeon, an actress, a psychologist, and a neuro-psychiatrist — are all interested in different aspects of the brain, particularly how it responds to race. But like all smart people, they are also searching for love, success, and identity in their own lives. Lydia Diamond brings these characters together in this sharp, witty play about social and sexual politics.

Admission is free; access the performance here: https://tuftsdramadance.anywhereseat.com/channel.php
