Teach In: Freedom of Expression and Banned Books

Wednesday, June 18 @ 7:00 pm

Free

Celebrate and support freedom of expression with a special Teach-In at the Medford Public Library featuring local authors who will read/perform short sections from banned or controversial books like “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, “1984” by George Orwell, “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood, “Maus” by Art Spielgelman, and “The Trial” by Franz and others. Each author will briefly reflect on why these books continue to resonate. Readers include Medford Poet Laureate Vijaya Sundaram, incoming Medford Poet Laureate Max Heinegg, poet and professor Julia Lisella, and Stephanie Schorow, author of nine books on Boston history. The final speaker will be Christina L. Dobbs, associate professor at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development, who will speak on book banning through the United States. The event will include audience participation and refreshments.
