Walking Tour: Through the Hallowells’ Neighborhood

Saturday, May 11, 2019 @ 10:00 am

In conjunction with the Medford Historical Society & Museum’s exhibit “Stearns, Shaw, and the Hallowells,” historian Dee Morris will conduct a walking tour, “Through the Hallowells’ Neighborhood on Lower Mystic Street.” Get a glimpse of the domestic world of the Hallowell families, whose stories reveal an array of independent thinkers who loved their children, neighbors and pets. Nicknamed “The Colony,” the Hallowell households infused creative energy into the Medford community.

The MHSM exhibit features items from its Civil War Collections, drawing attention to the connections between George Luther Stearns, Robert Gould Shaw, and the Medford Hallowell brothers, Edward and Norwood. Stearns, who recruited Black Infantry Union troops, recommended Shaw to train and lead the Massachusetts 54th Infantry. Shaw was killed at Fort Wagner; today a stately statue stands at the top of the Boston Common, dedicated to Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th. Medford’s Edward Hallowell would take Shaw’s place; Edward’s brother Norwood led the 55th Massachusetts.

Meet at the corner of High Street and Mystic Street for the walking tour.
