Jeri Johnson: Orchestrating Leadership Workshop

Thursday, March 1, 2018 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

Jeri Lynne Johnson presents a workshop on how her innovative program Orchestrating Leadership, an initiative and after-school workshop to help middle and high school students master executive functioning skills through music conducting, works. Participants will see the program in action in collaboration with one of the music department’s chamber music ensembles.

Johnson is conductor and founder of Philadelphia’s Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, the first orchestra in the nation led by an African-American woman, and founder of the Orchestrating Leadership program. In 2005, Ms. Johnson made history as the first African-American woman to win an international conducting prize when she was awarded the Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship. She will speak to and work with Tufts Music and Child Study students and lead the Tufts Youth Philharmonic in an open rehearsal. Co-sponsored by the Departments of Music and Child Study and Human Development.

Free; no tickets required. Johnson’s residency at Tufts  University is made possible by the Granoff Music Fund.
