The Real Score: Unraveling Myths About Trans People in Sports

Tuesday, March 5 @ 7:00 pm

Free

The Medford Public Library is partnering with a cohort of Massachusetts public libraries to host journalist Erin Reed for a virtual presentation titled “The Real Score: Unraveling Myths About Trans People in Sports,” on Zoom. This presentation will explore the complex and often misunderstood world of transgender athletes in sports. Delving into the history and current controversies, Reed will address the myths and misinformation surrounding “biological advantages.” She’ll also discuss the discriminatory nature of recent sports bans targeting transgender individuals, and how similar arguments have been historically used to marginalize other minority groups. Reed will look at the real world impact of these sports bans, and how they might touch places you didn’t think about. Finally, she will consider what transgender inclusion means for society at large.

Erin Reed (she/her) is a transgender journalist based in Washington, D.C. She tracks LGBTQ+ legislation around the United States for her subscription newsletter, Erin In The Morning. Her work has been cited by the Associated Press, Reuters, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and many more major media outlets.

Register through the library’s online calendar to receive the Zoom link.
