Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg
Thursday, January 30 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeThe Medford Historical Society & Museum presents the program “Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg,” with John Wooding, emeritus professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Richard Gregg was Gandhi’s confidant and friend for more than 20 years. He was the son of a Congregationalist minister who was born and lived in Medford and was educated at Harvard University. He worked as a labor lawyer and arbitrator in Boston and Chicago before moving to India to work and study with Gandhi. Gregg was driven by a deep sense of justice, a commitment to nonviolent and humane practices toward people and the planet, and a steady belief in the possibilities of peace. In 1936 he wrote “The Power of Non-Violence,” perhaps the leading book on pacifism of its day and the signature guide to peaceful protest. Register through the library’s new online calendar.
