Exhibit Opening: Sanford Biggers

Tuesday, October 8, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Free

Tufts University Art Galleries is the sole East Coast venue for the first exhibition devoted to Sanford Biggers’ BAM series. Over the past two decades, Biggers has developed a practice that encourages meaningful dialogue around history and trauma in the United States. Through video, sculpture and textiles, he brings to light the pain these acts have perpetrated upon society, but also points to the wider human condition and a desire to transcend. In his BAM series, begun in 2015, Biggers seeks to memorialize and honor unarmed black victims of police gun violence in America. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, December 15. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday.

In a related event, the annual Beckwith Lecture will feature a conversation between Biggers and Christa Clarke, independent curator/scholar, Arts of Global Africa, and affiliate, Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University. The lecture will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, in the Alumnae Lounge at Aidekman Arts Center.
