SUMMARY:Rescheduled: From Dance Club to Church Altar: Sanctifying the Seben
DESCRIPTION:Join ethnomusicologist Jean Ngoya Kidula for an illuminating colloquium examining the transformation of the seben — a musical section and practice that emerged within Congolese rumba and has historically been associated with secular\, and often stigmatized\, dance culture. This talk explores how and why the seben has been integrated into contemporary African and diasporic Christian worship\, reshaping its meaning within “praise and worship” contexts. \nThrough this discussion\, Kidula will consider how the sanctification of the seben affirms\, troubles\, and transforms Western frameworks for understanding African artistic expression\, while also interrogating renewed artistic practices and interpretations of Christianity in contemporary Africa. \nJean Ngoya Kidula\, Professor of Music (Ethnomusicology) at the University of Georgia\, is a leading scholar of African and African diasporic music. Her research spans African musicology\, gospel music in Africa and Sweden\, African-American religious music\, and composition across Africa and the diaspora. She is also an active performer and director of an African Music Ensemble.

SUMMARY:Granoff Colloquium: Listening to the Nakba
DESCRIPTION:Today’s Granoff Music Center Colloquium at Tufts University features Dr. David A. McDonald of Indiana University speaking on “Listening to the Nakba: Palestine and the Crisis of Response.” For Palestinians the “nakba\,” or catastrophe\, is a profound concept that describes the events of 1948\, when the majority of the world’s Palestinians were forced into exile\, as well as ongoing experiences of settler-colonial dispossession and erasure. As both historical event and contemporary discourse\, the nakba not only connects Palestinians across time and space\, but it captures the underlying logic that legitimizes myriad forms of violence\, death\, and political repression currently facing Palestinians (and their allies) around the world. Drawing from recent literature in indigenous sound studies\, McDonald argues that the nakba offers an essential point of contact for hearing Palestinian experience and for refusing colonial listening practices. McDonald is Associate Professor of Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University. Since 2002\, he has worked closely with Palestinian communities in Israel\, Jordan\, the West Bank\, Gaza\, and North America. Trained in ethnomusicology\, he has published widely on Palestinian music\, focusing specifically on the dynamics of trauma\, violence\, and exile. Free to the public with no tickets required. \n

SUMMARY:Granoff Colloquium: Exploring the Mind Through Music
DESCRIPTION:Today’s Granoff Music Center Colloquium at Tufts University features Dr. Anthony Brandt of Rice University speaking on “Exploring the Mind Through Music: Combining Artistic Performance and Scientific Experiment.” Thanks to advances in mobile brain-body imaging (MoBI)\, music and other art forms now have the potential to help scientists explore the neural underpinnings of human cognition and our social interactions in real-world conditions. Brandt\, professor and chair of Composition & Music Theory at Rice’s Shepherd School of Music\, will discuss several collaborations in which artistic performances are combined with MoBI experiments to investigate inter- and intra-brain synchrony and the brain dynamics of learning and creativity. Free to the public with no tickets required. \n

SUMMARY:Granoff Colloquium: Blown Kisses - How Film Composers Ruin Romantic Tension
DESCRIPTION:Today’s Granoff Music Center Colloquium at Tufts University is “Blown Kisses: How Film Composers Ruin Romantic Tension” and features Tufts faculty member Frank Lehman. Whether for melodrama or comedy\, few cinematic tropes are as memorable — or cringeworthy — as the rudely interrupted kiss. Composers for film and screen media have long appreciated the power of music to disrupt scenes of amorous passion\, and have developed a wide arsenal of techniques and tricks to deflate romantic tension. This talk considers what happens when the job of film music is not to the mood\, but to kill it. \n

SUMMARY:Granoff Colloquium: Janie Cole
DESCRIPTION:The Tufts University Department of Music’s first Granoff Music Center Colloquium of the spring semester will feature Yale University research scholar  Janie Cole on the topic\, “Sacred Sound\, Space\, and Afro-Eurasian Encounters in the Christian Kingdom of 17th-century Ethiopia.” The Jesuit mission to the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia (1557-1632) was one of its earliest and arguably most challenging projects in the early modern period. New ambitious architectural projects were undertaken as symbols of religious renewal and state supremacy\, and music was also central to Jesuit conversion practices. Drawing on 16th- and 17th-century travelers’ accounts\, new Jesuit archival documentation and indigenous sources\, this talk explores the role of music and ritual sounds in relation to the sacred spaces of new churches erected on the Ethiopian highlands and examines the musical art of conversion developed by European Jesuit missionaries hailing from Portuguese India placed in the wider context of a vibrant indigenous royal Ethiopian court culture\, local material economies of patronage that shaped these cultural dynamics\, and the influences of foreign designs on both music and architecture. \nDr. Janie Cole is a research scholar at Yale’s Institute of Sacred Music\, a visiting professor in Yale’s Department of Music\, and an affiliate of the Yale Council on African Studies. \n  \n
