The book draws heavily from primary source materials to bring to life many key participants and events in a complicated American Civil War battle that occurred at a time when the fate of our nation hung in the balance as violence replaced discourse. Along with discussions that add depth to this captivating story\, readers will have opportunities to hold and examine pieces of this history from the MHSM collections. Group members will read the book in four sections and meet weekly to discuss these at MHSM from 7PM to 9PM\, on Thursdays\, January 15\, 22\, 29 and February 5\, 2026. SUMMARY:Holiday Traditions in Boston: Holiday Party\, Presentation & Toy Drive
DESCRIPTION:In 1659\, the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony banned by law the celebration of Christmas as it was deemed to be a time of seasonal excess with no Biblical authority. Though repealed in 1681\, it would not be until 1856 that Christmas Day became a state holiday in Massachusetts. \nIn his book on Christmas Traditions in Boston\, Anthony Sammarco outlines the celebration (or lack thereof) of Christmas in the first two centuries after the city was settled in 1630. By the mid-19th century a German immigrant named Charles Follen introduced the Christmas tree to Boston\, and shortly thereafter Louis Prang introduced his colorful Christmas cards\, the first in Boston. SUMMARY:MHSM Family Program: Meet 'Kaiser'
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a special Sunday afternoon program for kids and families to see and learn about the museum’s stuffed carrier pigeon\, “Kaiser.” The program will share information about carrier pigeons — how they were trained\, how they carried information\, and how they were an important part of the communication internet in the past. Presenters will introduce the pigeon named “Kaiser” who served in World War I and explain how he came to Medford\, where he became a local celebrity. \nThe program will be specially designed for children and families. The information will be geared toward a young audience from preschool through elementary school (plus any others who are interested). It will include a craft project with craft paper and supplies that lets kids make their own paper carrier pigeon with flappable wings and attach a handwritten message for their bird to carry. Snacks and bird-shaped cookies will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with National Poetry Month\, the Medford Historical Society & Museum invites you to join Medford High English teacher and poet Max Heinegg and three other New England Poetry Club poets for a night of poetry and song. Max will perform some classic poems (from Keats to Frost) that he adapted into song\, giving a brief talk about each poem and the way in which a great lyric can be read or sung. Denise Bergman is the author of five poetry books. “The Shape of the Keyhole” is about a woman falsely accused and hanged for murder. “Three Hands None” unravels assault and its aftermath. “A Woman in Pieces Crossed a Sea” dismantles the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty. “The Telling” unfolds a child refugee’s lifelong secret. “Seeing Annie Sullivan” explores the early life of Helen Keller’s teacher.  Kevin Gallagher\, a poet\, publisher\, and political economist living in Greater Boston\, will present poems from his recent books “And Yet it Moves” and “The Wild Goose.”  Gallagher edits “spoKe\,” a Boston-based annual of poetry and poetics. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Lydia Moland - A Radical American Life
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents Colby College philosophy professor Lydia Moland for a talk on “A Radical American Life\,” hew new biography of abolitionist Lydia Maria Child\, one of Medford’s most famous 19th-century personalities. Born in 1802\, Child grew up near her father’s famous Medford bakery and would have witnessed evidence of slavery’s legacy in Medford as a young girl. In 1833\, she published a book-length denunciation of slavery and was ostracized by Boston polite society for her radical views. She persisted in fighting for racial equality\, women’s suffrage\, and Native American rights until she died in 1880. Despite this lifetime of activism\, she is best known for immortalizing her Medford childhood in the poem “Over the River and Through the Wood” – a fact whose irony would not have been lost on her.
