SUMMARY:Apollo Ensemble: Neighborhood Notes
DESCRIPTION:First Baptist Church of Medford welcomes the return of the Apollo Ensemble of Boston for their first ever “Neighborhood Notes” community run-out concert. Assistant Conductor Reuben Stern will lead a program of Mozart and Tchaikovsky and facilitate a conversation between the musicians of the orchestra and the audience. The program selections will be Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet\, Movement 2\, and Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. General admission tickets are $15 for adults\, $5 for students through Eventbrite.  Founded in 2018 by Elias Miller and Michael Tabak and conducted by Elias Miller\, the Apollo Ensemble of Boston is a 70-member orchestra made up of some of the area’s best musicians. They performed number of times at First Baptist Church of Medford before the pandemic. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Still Here: Music of Sorrow\, Resilience\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:First Baptist Church of Medford invites you to a program of four musical works performed by Jonathan Russell\, clarinet and bass clarinet\, and Solon Gordon\, piano\, that explore the various shades and colors of sorrow\, joy\, and resilience — and the ways in which they can intimately intertwine with one another. The centerpiece of the program is Russell’s 2022 composition “Still Here” for clarinet and piano. Inspired by the courage and resolve of President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian people in the face of Russian aggression\, the piece is dedicated to all oppressed peoples in all times and places\, who assert through culture\, art\, music\, and community that they are “still here.” Russell’s other composition\, “Sonata #2 for Bass Clarinet and Piano\,” is lighter and groove-driven but with darker underpinnings lurking below the surface. Francis Poulenc’s colorful and character-rich “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s poignant “Sorrow Songs” round out the program. Admission is free; donations are welcomed either through Eventbrite or at the door.

Led by Caplan\, a Medford resident\, Juventas is a cutting-edge chamber group that spotlights emerging voices and re-envisions classical music as a vibrant\, living art form. They bring audiences music from a diverse array of composers that live in today’s world and respond to our time. Supported in part by a grant from the Medford Arts Council. \n

SUMMARY:Kalliope Reed Quintet: Viva México\, Vive les Romantiques
DESCRIPTION:First Baptist Church of Medford begins its 2023-24 concert season with the return of the Kalliope Reed Quintet\, led by bassoonist Natalie Zemba\, performing the program “Viva México\, Vive les Romantiques.” The first half will be a celebration of Mexican Independence Day with exciting works by four living Mexican composers: Jose Elizondo\, Arturo Marquez\, Nubia Melina Jaime Donjuan\, and Abraham Gomez. The second half will feature something completely different: the beloved Violin Sonata by French Romantic composer Cesar Franck\, with guest artist Francine Trester on violin. Concluding the program will be a preview of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” \n
