After seeing firsthand how musicians’ can have a unique impact on environmental campaigns and recognizing the environmental footprint of concerts and festivals\, Lauren Sullivan and her musician husband\, Adam Gardner (guitarist/vocalist for popular indie band Guster\, which formed at Tufts and played its first show in Lewis Hall)\, founded REVERB in 2004 to create a more sustainable\, action-oriented music industry. \nOver 20 years later\, REVERB’s impact has been extraordinary. The organization has raised over $21 million for environmental causes\, eliminated 4.5 million plastic bottles\, neutralized 420\,000 metric tons of CO2E\, “greened” over 350 tours\, and inspired millions of fans to take action—all while pioneering the green music movement. Lauren and Adam are Co-Founders and Co-Executive Directors of REVERB\, which was named Official Music and Public Engagement Partner to the United Nations Environment Programme in 2018. \nThe conversation with Lauren and Adam will be moderated by special guest and fellow Tufts alumnus\, Madeline Weir\, A20\, REVERB’s Director of Impact. SUMMARY:HONK! U Symposium: Celebrating 20 Years of Street Music Activism
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 HONK! Festival will include a HONK! U Conference on Thursday\, October 9 at Tufts University’s Department of Music\, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, with breakfast available starting at 9:00 a.m. \nTwenty years ago\, the first HONK! Festival was held in Davis Square\, Somerville\, as a celebratory public dissent. Today\, street music—as practiced by brass bands to promote community-building\, art\, and activism—is more important than ever. This one-day event\, which includes presentations\, hands-on workshops\, and skill-sharing\, aims to bring together a community of scholars\, band leaders\, artists\, activists\, and others to explore and engage in innovative and practical applications of brass band and other forms of street music.
