SUMMARY:Author Talk: Giorgio Biancorosso - Remixing Wong Kar-wai
DESCRIPTION:The Tufts Department of Music and Tufts Film and Media Studies program presents a talk with author Giorgio Biancorosso about his 2024 book “Remixing Wong Kar Wai: Music\, Bricolage\, and the Aesthetics of Oblivion.” The book is a poetic\, wide-ranging evocation of cult filmmaker Wong Kar-wai’s modus operandi. Dubbed once the “best ear in the industry\,” Wong Kar-wai crafts the soundtracks of his films by jettisoning original scores in favor of commercial recordings. Remixing Wong Kar-wai examines the combinatorial practice at the heart of Wong’s cinema to retheorize musical borrowing\, appropriation\, and repurposing in Hong Kong cinema and beyond. In this talk\, Biancorosso — professor of music at Hong Kong University — will discuss the ways in which we can restore listening to the center of film studies\, and oblivion to that of culture. Free and open to the community.

SUMMARY:Film Screening and Conversation with Kenneth Tam
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition “Kenneth Tam: Standing in Soft Formation\,” and in collaboration with Tufts Film + Media Studies Program\, Tufts University Art Galleries is presenting a special screening of three short films/videos by Kenneth Tam: “All of M” (2019)\, “Breakfast in Bed” (2016) and “sump” (2015). The screening will be followed by conversation with Tam and Luis Arnías\, a filmmaker from Venezuela\, and faculty from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts. All are welcome and advance registration through Eventbrite is appreciated. \nAs evident in “Standing in Soft Formation\,” Tam’s work in film\, video and sculpture has long explored and critiqued modern-day masculinity through staged social rituals that trade in deep awkwardness: be they pre-prom photo-shoots\, fraternity probates\, or all-male clubs. Working with non-actors found via Craigslist\, Tam loosely scripts scenes for performance\, creating often tender\, funny\, and yes\, awkward videos and films.
