DESCRIPTION:This month’s Words and Music program at the West Medford Community Center welcomes Karl Alexander\, project manager for the Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA)\, to talk about the proposed Mystic Lakes Pathway project. The pathway\, which is in the early stages of design\, would construct a path from the High Street rotary in West Medford to just beyond Shannon Beach in Winchester. Alexander will detail the ongoing work being done to bring public awareness and support to this undertaking\, which is designed to enhance access and public safety for bikes\, trikes and hikes along this very popular stretch of Mystic Valley Parkway. DESCRIPTION:This month’s Words and Music program at the West Medford Community Center celebrates Women’s History Month. In the first hour\, host Terry E. Carter will sit down with Dr. Sheila M. Nutt\, one of the early members of the Pan Am BlackBirds\, the storied African American flight attendants whose acclaimed beauty and charm set the standard for career women in the 1960s and ’70s. Dr. Nutt\, a highly accomplished storyteller\, will shed fresh light on a host of larger-than-life experiences as a trailblazing role model for thousands of women who continue to take to the skies long after she and her beloved Black sisters did. \n The history-making will continue in the second hour of the program\, which will embrace the musical virtuosity of cellist-conductor-teacher Marshunda Smith\, the ground-breaking maestro of the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra. Last September\, she became the first Black female to lead that organization. Originally from Tennessee\, Marshunda’s enchantment with music began in sixth grade when she first picked up a cello. Initially sparked by a teenage crush\, her passion quickly evolved into a genuine love for the instrument. \nSeating is limited and masks are welcomed. SUMMARY:A Life in Music Lost & Found
DESCRIPTION:The West Medford Community Center presents “A Life in Music Lost & Found: My Journey as a Musician With Hearing Loss\,” a “talk and play” presentation with Betty Hauck\, violin and viola. For 50 years\, Hauck enjoyed a rich and rewarding career as a professional violist — including performing for the Kennedys at the White House\, in a string quartet with Yo Yo Ma\, and solo with the Boston Pops — until the day she realized that she had to retire because of progressive hearing loss. For three years\, she completely turned her back on music. In this presentation\, she tells how various twists and turns led her back into sharing the joy of music while educating and advocating for those with hearing loss. Her talk is punctuated by short musical selections on both violin and viola. A question-and-answer period will follow her approximately one-hour program. \n

DESCRIPTION:The West Medford Community Center is getting into the fall spirit with an Apple Butter Fest not only with apple butter making\, but also live music\, a petting zoo\, and other activities. Learn about growing and preserving food as you join in on apple butter making\, and take some home at the end of the event. Singer/songwriter/musician and Medford native Michael Maloney of the Celtic and Irish-American band the Boston Harbor Bhoys will perform solo from noon to 2 p.m. The McDonny’s Traveling Farm petting zoo will be open from 3 to 5 p.m. Admission is free to West Medford Community Center members; a $25 donation is suggested for non-members. \n

DESCRIPTION:The West Medford Community Center’s Words and Music program will feature an interview with Medford mayoral candidate Rick Caraviello\, and a musical performance by singer/songwriter Farayi Sophia Malek. Caraviello is a 12-year veteran of the Medford City Council. In the program’s first hour\, host Terry E. Carter will conduct a conversation with him about his family\, community\, and his Medford roots. In the second hour\, Malek will feature her musical repertoire\, which includes influences from gospel\, pop and jazz. The principal vocalist for the Danilo Perez’s Grammy Award-winning Global Messengers band\, Malek also is an instructor at Berklee College of Music. \nSeating is limited and masking is welcomed.
