DESCRIPTION:As part of the ongoing “Impossible Music” exhibition at Tufts University Art Galleries\, the Tufts New Music Ensemble — with special guest John McDonald — will perform a selection from Tom Johnson’s “Imaginary Music” series (1974-1975\, 1993). Containing a total of 104 scores\, these drawings of musical symbols or loose suggestions of notes promote non-linear interpretations\, and Johnson used them as tools to imagine new musical possibilities. DESCRIPTION:The Tufts Department of Music and Tufts University Art Galleries are hosting experimental musician and exhibiting artist C. Spencer Yeh for his first Boston-area performance in a decade. Presented in conjunction with the current TUAG exhibition “Impossible Music\,” Yeh will perform improvisations on violin\, voice\, and electronics in Distler Hall. One hour before the performance\, TUAG will offer a curatorial tour of the Yeh’s installation “World of Music\,” part of the “Impossible Music” exhibition\, in the adjacent gallery in Aidekman Arts Center; both are on view through April 20. Yeh’s performance is presented in collaboration with Non-Event\, a Boston-based concert series devoted to the presentation of the finest in experimental\, abstract\, improvised\, and new music from New England and around the world.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the ongoing “Impossible Music” exhibition at Tufts University Art Galleries\, the Tufts New Music Ensemble — with special guest John McDonald — will perform a selection from Tom Johnson’s “Imaginary Music” series (1974-1975\, 1993). Containing a total of 104 scores\, these drawings of musical symbols or loose suggestions of notes promote non-linear interpretations\, and Johnson used them as tools to imagine new musical possibilities. Free and open to the public with no tickets required. On view until April 20\, “Impossible Music” brings together sculptures\, sounds\, scores\, video\, and live performances to explore the radical\, interdisciplinary potential of conceptual and experimental music. \n

SUMMARY:Friday Activations: Conlon Nancarrow Compositions
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the current exhibition “Impossible Music\,” Tufts University Art Galleries is presenting a series of four player piano sessions featuring the boundary-defying work of composer Conlon Nancarrow. Nancarrow was one of the first composers to work with “auto-playing” musical instruments\, particularly the player piano\, because of its ability to perform scores that exceeded human ability. Nancarrow’s early work was characterized by its extreme technical demands\, only rarely performed to his satisfaction. He turned to machines as a means to faithfully hear his compositions\, which are complex arrangements of tempo\, rhythm\, and pitch. The program\, which features four compositions from “Study for Piano\,” will be presented again on February 14\, March 14\, and April 4\, all Fridays. \n

SUMMARY:Impossible Music Performance and Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Tufts University Art Galleries invites you to the opening of the exhibition “Impossible Music\,” a survey of the sonic vanguard\, with a performance of Aki Onda’s installation “Spirits Known and Unknown\,” followed by a public reception and community-wide celebration. Organized by curator Candice Hopkins and composer\, performer\, and installation artist Raven Chacon\, “Impossible Music” brings together sculptures\, sounds\, scores\, video\, and live performances to explore the radical\, interdisciplinary potential of conceptual and experimental music. From the banned to the bombastic\, the exhibition highlights the work of visionary artists who pushed music forward\, defying norms and piloting new forms of expression. Featured artists include Terry Adkins\, Black Quantum Futurism\, Nikita Gale\, Sarah Hennies\, Tom Johnson\, Christine Sun Kim\, Conlon Nancarrow\, Aki Onda\, and C. Spencer Yeh. \nAki Onda’s “Spirits Known and Unknown” (45 minutes) is an installation and performance featuring found brass bells that pulls on the myriad association of bells throughout the globe as symbols of spirituality\, peace\, and even in some cases\, war. To mark the opening of “Impossible Music\,” Onda developed a score for invited Che Chen and Zach Rowden to perform the bells as a means to ruptures the confines the structures of clock time. “Impossible Music” will be on exhibit through Sunday\, April 20.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the current exhibition “Across the Universe\,” Tufts University Art Galleries presents an interactive screening and conversation with exhibiting artist Tomashi Jackson\, Associate Professor Kareem Khubchandani (LaWhore Vagistan)\, and two a special guests — multidisciplinary performer and director of opera and theater Alexander Gedeon from the LA Philharmonic\, and Rebecca Uchill\, Professor of the Practice and Director of the Center for Art\, Design\, and Visual Culture at the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County. Featuring “One Night Only with Tommy Tonight\,” a rare live performance of Jackson as Tommy Tonight lip-syncing the Doobie Brothers with a soundtrack directed by Gedeon\, the event will discuss the ways drag and kinship are linked\, through intergenerational support\, grief\, and memory\, and the how participants’ artistic practices allow them to mourn and process loss. Presented in collaboration with the Tufts Department of Theatre\, Dance\, and Performance Studies and with support from the Tufts AS&E Diversity Fund.

It will be on view during regular gallery hours through December 8. A reception with the artist will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday\, September 18.

DESCRIPTION:“How do you throw a brick through the window…” is a research initiative comprised of this symposium presented on Zoom\, artist-led workshops\, and exhibitions\, co-organized by Tufts University Art Galleries with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center taking place from 2024–2026. The research initiative invites artists to engage the radical questioning of writer\, artist\, astrologer\, and disabled non-binary Korean-American activist Johanna Hedva: “How do you throw a brick through the window of a bank if you can’t get out of bed?” Written in the aftermath of the 2014 Black Lives Matter protests\, and now rethinking Hedva’s text in the wake of 2020 protests for racial equity and COVID-19 pandemic\, this long-term research project considers the troubling of public streets as de-facto sites for civic action and able-bodied action as the measure of protest. Instead\, participating artists offer research on various forms of embodied dissent informed by disabled\, crippled\, sick\, mad\, and healing frameworks and methodologies in past\, current\, and future projects. DESCRIPTION:Tufts University Art Galleries presents the program “Design\, A.I.\, and Afro-nowism.” In 2020 Stephanie Dinkins coined the term “Afro-now-ism\,” which she described as “the spectacular technology of the unencumbered black mind.” A play on Afrofuturism\, Afro-nowism acknowledges the urgencies of racial injustice\, climate disaster\, and their collisions by forsaking speculation in favor of immediate action — today. Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing the way we write\, think\, design\, and produce. Its potentials for and consequences to design\, artistic production\, student work\, and creative thinking are vast and largely unknown. DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition “Kenneth Tam: Standing in Soft Formation\,” and in collaboration with Tufts Film + Media Studies Program\, Tufts University Art Galleries is presenting a special screening of three short films/videos by Kenneth Tam: “All of M” (2019)\, “Breakfast in Bed” (2016) and “sump” (2015). The screening will be followed by conversation with Tam and Luis Arnías\, a filmmaker from Venezuela\, and faculty from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts. All are welcome and advance registration through Eventbrite is appreciated. \nAs evident in “Standing in Soft Formation\,” Tam’s work in film\, video and sculpture has long explored and critiqued modern-day masculinity through staged social rituals that trade in deep awkwardness: be they pre-prom photo-shoots\, fraternity probates\, or all-male clubs. Working with non-actors found via Craigslist\, Tam loosely scripts scenes for performance\, creating often tender\, funny\, and yes\, awkward videos and films.

DESCRIPTION:Tufts University Arts Galleries presents a roundtable conversation around institutional collecting and cultural representation by and for Indigenous peoples in the Americas. “Homelands\, Ancestral Knowledge\, and Cultural Stewardship” is the public portion of a multi-day convening that brings together Indigenous curators and cultural producers from Brazil and North America. Developed as an extension of TUAG’s fall exhibition. “Véxoa: We Know.” This event is free and open to all\, but registration is required through Eventbrite as space is limited.

DESCRIPTION:The Tufts University Art Galleries present “Picturing Us: The Power of the Gaze\,” a conversation with Dr. Deborah Willis hosted by Monroe France\, the inaugural Vice Provost for Institutional Inclusive Excellence at Tufts. France and Willis will discuss Willis’s extensive photographic career\, connecting her artistic practice to the work of Christian Walker\, a photographer\, critic\, and curator who graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in 1984. Walker was a path-making gay Black photographer active in Boston and Atlanta\, who made compelling and experimental work about queer sexuality\, race\, and their intersections from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. His work is the subject of an exhibition “Christian Walker: The Profane and the Poignant\,” organized by the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art\, New York\, and on view at the Tufts Art Galleries at SMFA in Boston through April 21. Willis is  University Professor and chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. \n
