SUMMARY:Hidden Illness in the White House: Patient Confidentiality vs. the Public Good
DESCRIPTION:The presidency of the United States is a demanding job that requires intellectual\, emotional and physical strength. As time has passed the size and the power of the Executive Branch have increased with more and more responsibility residing on that one person. All presidents have support staffs that they rely on to help make decisions. When the president is ill whose interests take precedence? The president who may have other issues or may be in denial? His staff who may be sacrificing their power? The citizens and the rest of the world who depend on a stable executive running the United States government? We shall explore three presidents: Woodrow Wilson\, Franklin Roosevelt and Dwight David Eisenhower to look at the specifics\, the uncertainties and the deceptions that not only occurred during their presidencies but also preceded their candidacies. \nSpeaker: Dr. Dale Magee

SUMMARY:The American Revolution: Catalyst for Fundamental Changes
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a program at the library\, “The American Revolution: Catalyst for Fundamental Changes\,” with historian James Bennett. Did Medford have an American Revolution? The city’s  experience of the American Revolution as a war is a well-documented and proud chapter of the community’s history. But to what extent was there a revolution in the hearts and minds of Medford’s people of the kind that John Adams described in 1918 when he wrote: “But what do We mean by the American Revolution? Do We mean the American War? The Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the Minds and Hearts of the People.” \nIn this presentation\, James Bennett will examine late 18th-century primary sources from Medford to shed light on the fundamental nature of how the people of Medford experienced political change during the tumultuous years of the revolutionary and early national periods. For Medford\, was the American Revolution simply a war to remove royal authority from the apex of their political system\, or was it a catalyst for a much more fundamental change in the values of their political system as a whole? This presentation will point to some possible answers to that question\, and spark conversations in the community about what that historical experience 250 years ago means for us today. \nBennett has worked as a public historian\, researcher\, actor\, and teacher for over 25 years. He currently works as a research fellow for Revolutionary Spaces\, the nonprofit that stewards Boston’s Old State House and Old South Meeting House. \nRegister using the library’s online calendar. \n

SUMMARY:A House Restored: Tragedies and Triumphs of Saving a New England Colonial
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a talk at the library by Lee McColgan on his book\, “A House Restored: The Tragedies and Triumphs of Saving a New England Colonial.” Old houses share their secrets only if they survive. Trading the corporate ladder for a stepladder\, McColgan commits to preserving the ramshackle Loring House\, built in 1702 in Pembroke\, Mass.\, using period materials and methods and on a holiday deadline. But his enchantment withers as he discovers the massive repairs it needs. He fights deteriorating bricks\, frozen pipes\, shattered windows\, a punctured foundation\, and even an airborne chimney cap while learning from a diverse cast of preservationists\, including a master mason named Irons\, a stone whisperer\, and the Window Witch. But can he meet his deadline before family and friends arrive\, or will it all come crashing down? McColgan’s journey expertly examines our relationship to history through the homes we inhabit\, beautifully articulating the philosophy of preserving the past to find purpose for the future. SUMMARY:Defining Moments with Dave McGillivray
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum invites you to the talk “Defining Moments” with Dave McGillivray\, race director of the B.A.A. Boston Marathon and motivational speaker. Everyone has a story to tell. For McGillivray\, a Medford High graduate\, it was his strong desire to be an athlete that led him to run across the country in 1978 at age 23. That 80-day trek across the U.S. led to a life of pushing himself both mentally and physically. He addresses audiences with a motivational account that is not about running\, but rather about what’s possible if you believe in yourself and your own ability to do the seemingly insurmountable. Come hear Dave translate his extraordinary life journeys and athletic achievements into life lessons that leave each audience wanting more. Reserve your seat by registering through the library’s new online calendar. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents the program “Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg\,” with John Wooding\, emeritus professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts\, Lowell. Richard Gregg was Gandhi’s confidant and friend for more than 20 years. He was the son of a Congregationalist minister who was born and lived in Medford and was educated at Harvard University. He worked as a labor lawyer and arbitrator in Boston and Chicago before moving to India to work and study with Gandhi. Gregg was driven by a deep sense of justice\, a commitment to nonviolent and humane practices toward people and the planet\, and a steady belief in the possibilities of peace. In 1936 he wrote “The Power of Non-Violence\,” perhaps the leading book on pacifism of its day and the signature guide to peaceful protest. Register through the library’s new online calendar. \n

Known as “Dr. Dirt\,” Crowley is a geoarchaeologist and researcher who has worked across the globe – but lives right here in Medford. Her work is focused on the dynamic environmental and climatic processes that preserve the archaeological record. This landscape legacy shapes and informs our understanding of the complex history of the Indigenous peoples who have lived here for millennia. This illustrated talk will highlight multiple topics of archaeological interest and describe new research. Registration is required through the library’s online calendar. \n

SUMMARY:What’s Faith Got to do With It? A Personal History
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents “What’s Faith Got to do With It? A Walk of Faith\, A Curious Mind\, and A Courageous Heart: A Personal Look at My Journey to Shiloh Baptist Church” with Pastor Gerald E. Bell. This presentation at the library will focus on the rich 127-year history of Shiloh Baptist Church as a cornerstone institution in the African American community in West Medford\, and on the future of this important house of worship in Medford. It will also include a chronological look at Pastor Bell’s journey as a 7-year-old Indiana boy survivor of senseless gun violence to a 65-year-old dreamer and pastor who is not finished yet. Says Bell\, “To describe myself as having a courageous heart is both arrogant and legitimate because fear has been my constant companion.” Registration is required through the library’s online calendar. \n

SUMMARY:The Great Abolitionist: Charles Sumner and the Fight for a More Perfect Union
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a talk at the library with historian Stephen Puleo about his new book\, “The Great Abolitionist: Charles Sumner and the Fight for a More Perfect Union\,” the story of one of the most influential non-presidents in American history. In the tempestuous mid-19th century\, as slavery consumed congressional debate and America careened toward civil war and split apart — when the very future of the nation hung in the balance — Charles Sumner’s voice rang strongest\, bravest\, and most unwavering. Where others preached compromise and moderation\, the Boston-born lawyer\, politician\, and statesman denounced slavery’s evils to all who would listen and demanded that it be wiped out of existence. More than any other person of his era\, he blazed the trail on the country’s long\, uneven\, and ongoing journey toward realizing its full promise to become a more perfect union. SUMMARY:Sacco and Vanzetti: Inciting Passions a Century Later
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a talk by Dennis J. Curran\, a retired justice from the Massachusetts Superior Court\, titled “The Murder Trial of Sacco and Vanzetti: Inciting Passions a Century Later.” On April 15\, 1920\, a robbery and double murder in South Braintree\, Massachusetts\, led to the arrest of two Italian anarchists\, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. They were tried and convicted at Dedham Superior Court in 1921. No one could have foreseen that this local criminal case would become an international affair. Arguably the most famous trial in the 20th century\, this murder trial propelled two Italian immigrant anarchists into the international media spotlight. It divided a nation in the 1920s\, and has continued to arouse deep emotions\, giving rise to enormous literature. Register through Eventbrite. \nThis program will be preceded at 6:30 p.m. by the Medford Historical Society & Museum’s 2024 Annual Meeting in the same space. All are welcome to attend. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:MHSM Family Program: Meet 'Kaiser'
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a special Sunday afternoon program for kids and families to see and learn about the museum’s stuffed carrier pigeon\, “Kaiser.” The program will share information about carrier pigeons — how they were trained\, how they carried information\, and how they were an important part of the communication internet in the past. Presenters will introduce the pigeon named “Kaiser” who served in World War I and explain how he came to Medford\, where he became a local celebrity. \nThe program will be specially designed for children and families. The information will be geared toward a young audience from preschool through elementary school (plus any others who are interested). SUMMARY:The Power of Truth: Early Diversity in a Medford Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents local historian Dee Morris with the Black History Month program\, “The Power of Truth: Early Diversity in a Medford Neighborhood.” Morris will introduce residents to the Revalyons\, an early free Black family that lived in East Medford for many years. Thomas (born in 1777) and Margaret (born in 1781) Revalyon moved their family to a house on Cross Street in Medford in 1828. Thomas owned a popular Main Street barber shop while Margaret attended to the household. After growing up amid Yankee ship carpenters\, three of their children married notable partners: Younger Margaret wed a Black abolitionist\, Charlotte married a local West Indian barber\, and Robert became the soul mate of Keziah Gould\, a Native American descended from Massasoit\, the Wampanoag who befriended the early Pilgrims. Several Revalyons are buried in the Cross Street Cemetery section of Oak Grove. The story of their lives in Medford demonstrates the historical diversity of our community. SUMMARY:Lizzie Borden & John Best: Knowlton’s Trials that Gripped Boston
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum begins its 2024 program season with “Lizzie Borden & John Best: Knowlton’s Trials That Gripped Boston’s South and North Shores\,” featuring speakers Douglas Heath and Alison Simcox. Hosea Knowlton is best known as the chief prosecutor of Lizzie Borden\, whose 1893 trial for the murder of her parents created a national sensation. During his tenure as Massachusetts attorney general\, Knowlton tried more murder cases than any man who held that office. As notorious as the Borden trial was at the time\, one of his last cases\, the trial of John Courtney Best\, also involved a horrific axe murder. \nIn this talk\, Simcox and Heath will reveal the facts and bizarre circumstances of this shocking murder and you can decide whether Knowlton’s famous ability to incisively question trial witnesses and present eloquent arguments ensured that justice was served. Simcox is an environmental scientist\, local historian and author.  Heath is a hydrogeologist and local historian. They have co-authored five books on the history of Boston’s North Shore. \nReserve your seat through Eventbrite. \n
