DESCRIPTION:Wanda Sykes has been deemed one of the funniest stand up comics by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Funniest People in America. \nSykes was seen on several television shows over the past two years.   This year she made a return to HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” starring opposite Larry David.   In 2010 she starred on her own late night talk show on FOX\, “The Wanda Sykes Show”.    In October of 2009 her second HBO stand up special “I’ma Be Me” premiered.  It was taped at the Warner theatre in Washington DC where she tackled topics like the first black president\, gay cruises\, being a new mom and aging.   The special was nominated for two 2010 Primetime Emmy awards: Outstanding Variety\, Music or Comedy Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety\, Music or Comedy Special.   \n This July she can be heard in the animated feature “Ice Age: Continental Drift” as ‘Granny.’  In 2010 she was heard in the Fox animated feature “Rio” as ‘the Goose.’ \nHer first HBO comedy special “Wanda Sykes: Sick and Tired” debuted in October 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Variety\, Music or Comedy Special.  It was taped in Seattle and covered everything from racial profiling to gay marriage. \nSykes was seen in the feature films “Evan Almighty\,” the sequel to “Bruce Almighty\,” in which she co-starred with Steve Carell\, the New Line feature “Monster-In-Law” starring opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda\, and was heard in the animated feature “Over the Hedge” for Dreamworks as well as “The Barnyard” for Paramount Pictures.   She can also be seen co-starring with Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman in the romantic comedy “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.”  Sykes starred and produced the Comedy Central show “Wanda Does It” where she tried various non-showbiz jobs.  Her first book titled Yeah\, I Said It\, published by Simon & Schuster\, hit bookstores in September 2004.  Yeah\, I Said It is a hilarious collection of essays touching on life\, family and current events. \nIn the fall of 2003 she was seen on Fox’s “Wanda at Large” which she wrote\, produced and starred in. She also has a one hour Comedy Central special called “Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied”.  In addition\, she can be seen on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” or heard on Comedy Central’s “Crank Yankers” as the voice of Gladys Murphy. \nWanda was born in Portsmouth\, VA and raised in Maryland.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University. Her stand-up career began at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington\, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience. \nShe spent 5 years as part of HBO’s critically acclaimed “Chris Rock Show.” As a performer and writer on the show\, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmys and in 1999 won the Emmy for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety\, Music or Comedy Special.”  In 2001\, she won the American Comedy Award for “Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic”.  She won three more Emmys\, in 2002\, 2004 and 2005 \, for her work on “Inside the NFL” for Outstanding Studio Show – Weekly- Inside The NFL. \nIn 2010 she won a GLAAD award for promoting equal rights for gays and lesbians in the media. \nShe also appeared in the feature films: “Pootie Tang”\, “Nutty Professor 2; The Klumps”\, and “Down to Earth”.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Violent Femmes
DESCRIPTION:Violent Femmes formed in 1981 as an acoustic punk band playing on the streets of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. Their main influences at that time were Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps and The Velvet Underground. Their goal was to rock harder than any other acoustic act on the planet. After being rejected for an audition by a local nightclub\, the Femmes set up outside a Pretenders gig and began to play. Pretenders’ lead singer Chrissie Hynde asked them to open that night’s show\, which gave the young band a publicity boost and caught the attention of Richard Hell\, who invited the Femmes to open for him in NYC. A rave review in the New York Times eventually led to a record deal\, which in turn spawned worldwide touring. Violent Femmes eponymous debut album became the first and only album in Billboard history to enter the charts with a platinum certification- eight years after its release. I didn’t realise how much people would love seeing how I did it. I think people got a kick out of seeing someone do something risky live\, and pull it off.” Her debut album\, Eye to the Telescope\, solidified her as a leading voice in the burgeoning folk-pop movement. Her debut record produced enduring hits such as the rhythmically charged “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree\,” the tender ballad “Other Side of the World\,” and the soaring anthem “Suddenly I See\,” which would later become synonymous with The Devil Wears Prada. She recalls her Manager at the time saying to her\, “enjoy this moment; they’ve used your entire unedited song for the beginning of the film\, no dialogue. It’ll probably never happen like this again”. The iconic opening scene of the movie cemented her place in a defining cultural moment. Amid a crowded field of rising female singer-songwriters\, Tunstall stood apart\, exuding authenticity and displaying an unmistakable stage presence and musicianship. “There are two core elements to my style\,” she reflects. “I’ve got the troubadour\, acoustic\, emotionally driven side\, and then there’s the raw\, fiery rock element with a ton of teeth.” This duality – switching from heartfelt acoustic ballads to gritty rock anthems – has been a hallmark of her career. By the time her sophomore album Drastic Fantastic was released in 2007\, Tunstall had evolved from folk-pop ingénue to bona fide rock star. The record leaned further into guitar-driven rock without losing the melodic hooks that defined her sound. It reflected her resistance to being confined to one musical identity\, pushing beyond her folk roots. This was further explored in her 2010 album Tiger Suit\, recorded in Berlin\, where she fused acoustic instrumentation with pulsing electronic beats\, breaking new creative ground. Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon (2013) marked a dramatic shift in her sound and mood. Recorded in the widescreen desert landscapes of Tucson\, Arizona\, the album embraced a stripped back\, Americana-tinged aesthetic\, mirroring a period of personal upheaval\, including the loss of her father and the breakdown of her marriage. Critically lauded\, the album revealed some of Tunstall’s most intimate and vulnerable work. As she entered the second decade of her career\, Tunstall embarked on one of her most ambitious ventures yet: a trilogy of albums exploring the interwoven themes of soul\, body\, and mind. The first\, 2016’s KIN\, was the ‘soul’ record – a bright\, anthemic return that rekindled her love of music after a period of disillusionment. In 2018\, she followed with WAX\, the ‘body’ record\, which embraced her rock instincts with a visceral intensity. The trilogy concluded in 2022 with NUT\, the ‘mind’ album\, written during a period of profound life changes\, including her move to the U.S.\, as well as creating an album remotely through the pandemic. “This trilogy represents probably the most extreme and transformative period of my life\,” Tunstall reflects.
