SUMMARY:The Great Orisa and Almighty Father: Spirituality\, Freedom\, and the Black Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:Join the Royall House and Slave Quarters (15 George Street\, Medford\, MA) on November 18th at 7PM for the panel “The Great Orisa and Almighty Father: Spirituality and Freedom Across the Diaspora” with esteemed panelists\, Dr. Tracey E. Hucks (Harvard University) and Dr. Shively T.J. Smith (Boston University). \nInspired by formerly enslaved woman Belinda Sutton’s 1783 petition to the Massachusetts General Court\, this panel investigates the ways African-descended people across the diaspora have engaged with spirituality in identity formation and freedom making throughout time. Panelists will examine Sutton’s own connection with Orisa and Christianity and consider the ways Black people and systems have used spirituality to advance and hinder freedom. Register today to attend this unforgettable event! Refreshments will be provided.
