SUMMARY:Master Gardener Speaker Series: New England Native Flora
DESCRIPTION:This presentation focuses on the native plants of New England. Plants native to our region will be easier to maintain\, better able to withstand New England weather and may offer better resistance to deer and rabbits. The trees\, shrubs\, and perennials that evolved here will grow here with much less input from you. You will reduce your workload while creating a paradise for the native birds and pollinators. \nAbout the Master Gardener: Gretel Anspach is a Trustee of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society\, a Lifetime Master Gardener with the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association\, and a recently-retired systems engineer for Raytheon. She won the MMGA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Gretel established and maintains a 20\,000 square foot food production garden that has provided fresh produce to the Marlboro and Maynard Food Pantries for the last ten years. Her primary interest and focus is always in the science behind horticulture.

SUMMARY:MHSM's Follow the Red Brick Road: Interpreting the Freedom Trail
DESCRIPTION:“Follow the red brick road!” These iconic lines are a staple on Boston’s Freedom Trail that connects the city’s Revolutionary sites in a 2.5 mile trail. Also iconic are those who interpret Boston’s Revolutionary past\, especially when wearing period accurate clothes! Join Phoebe Sargeant\, a history teacher at Medford High School and seasoned Freedom Trail Tour Guide who has led tour groups through Boston’s most historic locations since 2018. \nHer illustrated talk will virtually guide you through some of Boston’s most famous sites\, including Boston Common\, Park Street Church\, The Granary Burial Ground and The Old Massachusetts State House\, as she explains the harrowing events of the American Revolution and some peculiar details about our nation’s founding (who knew Samuel Adams never changed his suit!). You’ll even get to meet Margaret Kemble Gage\, the real-life wife of General Thomas Gage\, Phoebe’s character on the trail\, and how she may or may not have caused the American Revolution. \nWant to know more about Boston’s role in the nation’s founding\, or want to know more about what it’s like to interpret these stories while wearing period costumes on a hot August day? Join us for “Follow the Red Brick Road: Interpreting the Freedom Trail.” \nSpeaker: Phoebe Sargeant\, Freedom Trail Guide
