SUMMARY:Rehearsal as Research: “Japanese Tea Ceremony” in Practice and in Performance
DESCRIPTION:Rehearsal as Research: “Japanese Tea Ceremony” in Practice and in Performance\nIn contemporary Japanese Tea (chanoyu\, chado\, or “Japanese tea ceremony”)\, practitioners learn to distinguish between “practice” in the sense of rehearsal\, as carried out in weekly recurring sessions with an instructor versus what is often called “real tea\,” corresponding to the sense of performance\, the public culmination of rehearsal. Despite the seeming primacy of the “real” Performance\, most practitioners end up spending the vast majority of the time they spent doing tea in rehearsal\, not in performance. Of course\, such a divide is also fundamental to theater practice as well\, and paying more attention to what is learned in each format and where scholars derive their knowledge of the whole practice may open new insights into where and how performative norms like “identity” and “culture” are maintained\, perpetuated\, and evolve. \nMichelle Liu Carriger\, PhD has been studying the Urasenke tradition of chado (“tea ceremony”) since 1999\, in various locations including Los Angeles\, Colorado\, Kansas\, Boston\, London\, and in Kyoto during a yearlong Midorikai fellowship at the Urasenke Gakuen Professional College of Chado. She holds a second degree Urasenke teaching license and chamei (tea name) “Somi.” Additionally\, she researches and writes academically on tea practice and theory and spent two years in rural Ehime prefecture\, Japan\, studying in the Omotesenke lineage.

SUMMARY:World Poetry Salon
DESCRIPTION:Learn about modern poetry with short poems from some of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth century. We’ll listen to or read the poems\, share initial impressions\, and discuss whatever questions or themes emerge. The texts will be provided at the meeting—no homework required! \nIn April\, we’ll feature a special New England edition of the salon\, in connection with the Springward Poetry Festival— Ruth Stone of Vermont and Philip Booth of Maine. \nThis free salon-style series welcomes everyone—whether you’re well-versed in poetry or simply curious. Drop in for one session or all; each 90-minute meetup stands on its own. Prior experience with poetry will be helpful but isn’t required. An interest in innovative techniques\, tolerance for ambiguity\, and appreciation of different points of view will also be helpful. \nEmphasis will be given to poets who bore witness to social upheaval and shaped modern literature with their responses to historical events. We will take a global perspective and include many writers in different languages who have been translated into English. Brief introductions to the poets will be offered\, but no stuffy lectures; we’ll make connections and discoveries together through our sharing of questions and observations. \nHosted by Gary Roberts\, a poet and co-founder of Arts Collaborative Medford\, as part of our literary arts initiative. Bring your coffee\, tea\, or notebook and join us for a relaxed\, open conversation about how poetry can reflect\, resist\, and reimagine the world around us.

SUMMARY:Stuck / Landowner / Pew Pew – Live at Deep Cuts

Stuck\, Landowner\, and Pew Pew bring a stacked lineup of angular indie rock\, post-punk energy\, and experimental edge to Deep Cuts. \nExpect sharp guitars\, off-kilter rhythms\, and sets that lean into tension\, texture\, and momentum. Each act pushes in a different direction\, but the throughline is clear: loud\, smart\, and built for a room that’s paying attention.

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Sound Baths with Hendrik
DESCRIPTION:Ease into Friday with a restorative morning sound bath at Arts Collaborative Medford. Hendrik leads this meditative program with gong and singing bowls\, creating long\, resonant tones intended to support relaxation\, reflection\, and a calm start to the day. \nWhat’s a Soundbath?\nA soundbath is a performance of sound or music which is intended to relax\, to spiritually heal\, and to create a meditative state. Hendrik will play gong and singing bowls for this program. Often the sounds are long\,  sustained tones and harmonic resonances that happen higher above deep droning fundamental tones. The sound serves as a focal point for meditation. Instead of trying to focus on nothing or on the breath\, the participant concentrates on the sound as it changes and develops. \nWhat to Expect:\nPlease bring a yoga mat or meditation cushion with you. People often bring blankets and pillows as well. You will get the option to sit in a cushioned chair if desired. \nProgram Flow\nThere will be an introductory discussion where participants can check in with the group. Lately this has included discussions about stressors\, anxiety and depression. We will do some breathwork to relax a bit before the actual music. The soundbath will last about 60 minutes. After the bath\, we will also have time to discuss the experience\, check in with our community\, and plan how to support each other.

SUMMARY:The Jam Down By Riverside (Potluck)
DESCRIPTION:The Jam Down By Riverside is a direct descendent of the now defunct Blues Jam at the Porch Southern Fare & Juke Joint\, which was a descendant of the Johnny D’s blues jam. The jam is for building community and building skills. We welcome people of all ages\, abilities\, styles and instruments to join in the jamming. We do not have a strict Blues Only jam rule\, but probably 85% of the repertoire is blues or blues-derived music. Please come to play or listen. \nThe jams are on the Second Sundays of the month from 4 – 7 PM. \nWe’re putting out a special call to teachers and their students to join us and we’re specificly trying to facilitate connections between people with more experience and folks with less experience. \nWhat to expect:\nThe Jam is first come – first served\, meaning you get into the pool to play when you arrive and sign up. There will be 3-4 different groups per hour depending on attendance. More people = shorter sets and more sets\, so more people are able to play. The host will put different bands together based on the abilities and instrumentation available from the attendees. Each group will have a bandleader (often the lead vocalist) who will call songs\, solos\, starts\, breaks and endings. \nThis is a potluck event\, so bring food to share or bring you own eats. We will have beverages for sale for your convenience. \nPlease Do bring your own instrument\, cable\, sticks\, microphone\, and small harp amps.\nPlease Do not bring your own guitar amp and unless you have talked to the host in advance. \nVolunteers will provide the following backline for players: drumkit\, bass rig\, 2 guitar amps\, 2 direct boxes\, microphones\, monitors\, PA system. We are taking donations of various equipment for backline. Please inquire about a donation. In particular we are looking for a small drumset and <15w guitar amps or modeling pedals. \nWe will ask for donations to offset the cost of the event and to show support for our organization.

SUMMARY:"Defunded/Defunked!" Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Defunded/Defunked!—an energetic and thought-provoking exhibition curated by and featuring artists from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. \nThis exhibition explores what it means to create\, resist\, and find joy within systems shaped by scarcity\, excess\, and shifting cultural values. Through humor\, irreverence\, and experimentation across media\, the artists respond to the constraints of funding\, the legacy of funk art\, and the complexities of making work in a politically and technologically charged moment. \nThe evening offers a chance to meet the artists\, engage in lively conversation\, and experience the work in a welcoming\, community-driven space. Light refreshments will be provided. Come be part of a night that invites reflection\, rebellion\, and a little bit of defunking. \nCurator: Mai Pham \nArtists: Co & Lee – Dana Colston – Daria Jin – Diego Gonzalez – Elan Cohen –  Helena Abdelnasser – J Grace Giordano – Julia McGhean – Kai Barker Dennet – Kalim Fernandes – Mai Pham – Maryamma Blankson – Matilda Love – Mikey Sims – Paola Michelle Silva Lizarrage – Paul Fauller – Shiyeon Ku – Young One

SUMMARY:Sarah Bradlee Fulton Statue Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join the community on Patriot’s Day for the unveiling of a new statue honoring Sarah Bradlee Fulton\, Medford’s own heroic patriot of the American Revolution. This special ceremony celebrates her legacy and contributions to American independence in the heart of the city she called home. \nThis long-anticipated project was initiated and led by Laura Duggan — local historian\, actress\, and playwright — who began work in early 2024 and served as program manager throughout its development. Through dedicated fundraising\, collaboration with the sculptor\, and coordination with city leadership\, Duggan — who serves as President of Looking Back at Medford History — and a committed group of volunteers brought this vision to life\, culminating in the statue’s installation on the grounds of City Hall. \n\nIn addition to the statue dedication\, Looking Back at Medford History Inc.\, is staging activities at Medford’s Historic Isaac Hall House (ICCM). There will be “Ye Old Arcade\,” colonial activities for children\, and a dramatic reading of Longfellow’s poem\, “Paul Revere’s Ride.”  There will also be free hot chocolate compliments of Dunkin Donuts and live fiddling and drumming music as folks await the arrival of Paul Revere!  The ICCM will also be conducting tours of the Isaac Hall House.\n\nAll are welcome to attend this meaningful moment in Medford’s history.

SUMMARY:Botanical Eco Printing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on\, immersive workshop where nature becomes your creative partner. Botanical Eco Printing is a sustainable and beautiful way to transfer the natural pigments of leaves\, flowers\, and other plant materials onto fabric or paper using heat\, moisture and pressure. No two prints are ever the same- each piece is a unique reflection of the natural world around us. You will make at lease two prints (more if time allows). Materials will be provided\, but you are encouraged to bring your own leaves or flowers to experiment with.
