DESCRIPTION:Join The Queer Neighborhood Council (TQNC) for our regular sewing skill share! Whether you’ve never used a sewing machine or you’re an experienced costumer\, let’s craft together in a space centering LGBTQIA+ voices and experiences. \nWhat to expect: \n\nWe’ll kick off the gathering with a brief tutorial on using a sewing machine and follow with open time to practice\, work on projects\, and mingle. Bring that top you’ve been meaning to crop or those pants you’ve been meaning to hem. Bring your favorite piece of clothing that needs to be patched up or altered\, or the elaborate costume you’ve been working on. Or come with nothing at all but excitement to learn a new skill!\nWe will provide basic machines and supplies for attendees. Please note that you may not be guaranteed your own machine to use due to limited supplies\, and you may be partnered with a sewing buddy. (If you have your own machine\, feel free to bring it.)\nA few experienced sewing “guides” will be present to teach and answer questions.\nAll are welcome\, regardless of skill level\, experience\, or identity.\n\nThis program is for adults\, teens\, and children ages 8+. Children below middle school age must be attended by a parent or guardian to help them with their project.  \nYou are encouraged but not required to RSVP for this event! DESCRIPTION:Presented as part of the Boston Women Take the Reel Film Festival. \nNg’endo Mukii will present a collection of short\, animated films spanning a decade of work. She will surface the themes and process of her work\, contextualizing them in her heritage as a Kenyan\, and her experience as part of the Afro diaspora. \nFollowing the films will be a Q&A discussion with writer and director\, Ng’endo Mukii. \nNg’endo Mukii is an animation writer and director\, and Professor of the Practice at the SMFA at Tufts. She’s best known for “Enkai”\, her Annie Award-winning episode in the Disney+ anthology series Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire. \nHer Royal College of Art graduation film\, Yellow Fever is a critically acclaimed animated documentary exploring Western influences on African women’s beauty. Her mixed-media and inter-genre approach to film making\, gives her an incredibly unique visual language and a preeminent voice in animation.​

SUMMARY:Where The Light Came In: Judith Black Book Signing and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The most consequential moments are rarely dramatic. What stays with us\, what makes us feel truly seen\, is often small\, domestic\, and endlessly repeated. Judith Black’s photographs\, made at home in the early 1980s of her four young children and their stepfather\, remind us of this simple truth. \nIn 1980\, after a divorce\, Judith moved her family to Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, and took a job at the darkroom at MIT. Their home wasn’t grand\, but it was theirs\, a place to begin again. Not long after settling in\, they found a worn old armchair left on the side of the road and gave it a place by the window. It became a spot of rest and quiet theatre\, a vantage point from which Judith watched her children grow\, day by day\, frame by frame. \nThis new book gathers every photograph she made of that single chair. What begins as cast-off furniture becomes\, through her attentive eye\, a kind of threshold: a simple thing that holds a whole world. There is a truth here that is easy to overlook\, that by staying close to the ordinary\, by returning to the same corner of a room\, we might learn to see more clearly. And that the measure of a life is so often found not in grand gestures\, but in the worn fabric of a chair\, the shifting light\, the hush of children growing older under our watch.

SUMMARY:Friday Morning Sound Baths with Hendrik
DESCRIPTION:What’s a Soundbath?\nA soundbath is a performance of sound or music which is intended to relax\, to spiritually heal\, and to create a meditative state. Hendrik will play gong and singing bowls for this program. Often the sounds are long\,  sustained tones and harmonic resonances that happen higher above deep droning fundamental tones. The sound serves as a focal point for meditation. Instead of trying to focus on nothing or on the breath\, the participant concentrates on the sound as it changes and develops. \nWhat to Expect:\nPlease bring a yoga mat or meditation cushion with you. People often bring blankets and pillows as well. You will get the option to sit in a cushioned chair if desired. \nProgram Flow\nThere will be an introductory discussion where participants can check in with the group. Lately this has included discussions about stressors\, anxiety and depression. We will do some breathwork to relax a bit before the actual music. The soundbath will last about 60 minutes. After the bath\, we will also have time to discuss the experience\, check in with our community\, and plan how to support each other.

DESCRIPTION:Homecoming is a transformative musical experience that explores the profound ties between Africa and its far-reaching diasporas. Both symbolic and sonic\, the project centers on “return”—the spiritual\, cultural\, and historical journey of rhythms\, melodies\, and improvisational languages that traveled from West Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas\, evolving into jazz\, highlife\, Afrobeat\, and Afro-Latin traditions. The musicians will perform original compositions as well as standard repertoire from Ghanaian High Life and Afro Caribbean music.

The festival then kicks off on Friday night\, April 10\, at 6:00 with a public reception and a set of poetry readings\, including by Max Heinegg\, Medford’s Poet Laureate. \nOn Saturday\, April 11\, we’ll offer a daylong lineup of programming\, with readings\, workshops\, and more! Featured during this year’s festival will be Black Ocean\, an award-winning independent publisher with Medford roots\, as it celebrates its 20th anniversary. We will highlight Massachusetts and regional poets as headlining performers throughout the weekend. There will be an Open Mic for community members to share their work. We will offer workshops proposed and led by local poets to provide attendees with a safe\, communal space for poetic exploration.
