SUMMARY:The Jam Down By Riverside
DESCRIPTION:The Jam Down By Riverside is a direct descendent of the now defunct Blues Jam at the Porch Southern Fare & Juke Joint\, which was a descendant of the Johnny D’s blues jam. The jam is for building community and building skills. We welcome people of all ages\, abilities\, styles and instruments to join in the jamming. We do not have a strict Blues Only jam rule\, but probably 85% of the repertoire is blues or blues-derived music. Please come to play or listen. \nThe jams are on the Second Sundays of the month from 4 – 7 PM. \nWe’re putting out a special call to teachers and their students to join us and we’re specificly trying to facilitate connections between people with more experience and folks with less experience. \nWhat to expect:\nThe Jam is first come – first served\, meaning you get into the pool to play when you arrive and sign up. There will be 3-4 different groups per hour depending on attendance. More people = shorter sets and more sets\, so more people are able to play. The host will put different bands together based on the abilities and instrumentation available from the attendees. Each group will have a bandleader (often the lead vocalist) who will call songs\, solos\, starts\, breaks and endings. \nThis is a potluck event\, so bring food to share or bring you own eats. We will have beverages for sale for your convenience. \nPlease Do bring your own instrument\, cable\, sticks\, microphone\, and small harp amps.\nPlease Do not bring your own guitar amp and unless you have talked to the host in advance. \nVolunteers will provide the following backline for players: drumkit\, bass rig\, 2 guitar amps\, 2 direct boxes\, microphones\, monitors\, PA system. We are taking donations of various equipment for backline. Please inquire about a donation. In particular we are looking for a small drumset and <15w guitar amps or modeling pedals. \nWe will ask for donations to offset the cost of the event and to show support for our organization.

After seeing firsthand how musicians’ can have a unique impact on environmental campaigns and recognizing the environmental footprint of concerts and festivals\, Lauren Sullivan and her musician husband\, Adam Gardner (guitarist/vocalist for popular indie band Guster\, which formed at Tufts and played its first show in Lewis Hall)\, founded REVERB in 2004 to create a more sustainable\, action-oriented music industry. \nOver 20 years later\, REVERB’s impact has been extraordinary. The organization has raised over $21 million for environmental causes\, eliminated 4.5 million plastic bottles\, neutralized 420\,000 metric tons of CO2E\, “greened” over 350 tours\, and inspired millions of fans to take action—all while pioneering the green music movement. Your teacher will lead you and the other families in music activities ranging from lullabies to full-on jam sessions (with child-friendly instruments\, of course!). It’s so much fun you won’t realize how much learning is taking place! \nYou’ll take home the award-winning music used in class\, along with an illustrated songbook and other resources. As you discover new ways to play with music all week long\, you’ll be supporting your child’s music-learning and overall development—even if you don’t think of yourself as a great singer or dancer. \nWhy mixed ages?\nChild development researchers discovered that grouping children of different ages in one class encourages natural\, family-style learning\, so Music Together developed the Mixed-Age Music Class. In this class\, everyone participates at their own levels: babies vocalize\, listen\, and observe; toddlers play and experiment; and preschoolers build confidence as they emerge as classroom leaders. Grownups are happy because everyone can come to class together!

DESCRIPTION:Learn about modern poetry with short poems from some of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth century. We’ll listen to or read the poems\, share initial impressions\, and discuss whatever questions or themes emerge. The texts will be provided at the meeting—no homework required! \nIn March we’ll feature Jorge Luis Borges of Argentina and Philip Larkin of England. \nThis free salon-style series welcomes everyone—whether you’re well-versed in poetry or simply curious. Drop in for one session or all; each 90-minute meetup stands on its own. Prior experience with poetry will be helpful but isn’t required. An interest in innovative techniques\, tolerance for ambiguity\, and appreciation of different points of view will also be helpful. \nEmphasis will be given to poets who bore witness to social upheaval and shaped modern literature with their responses to historical events. We will take a global perspective and include many writers in different languages who have been translated into English. Brief introductions to the poets will be offered\, but no stuffy lectures; we’ll make connections and discoveries together through our sharing of questions and observations. \nHosted by Gary Roberts\, a poet and co-founder of Arts Collaborative Medford\, as part of our literary arts initiative.
