SUMMARY:Self Portrait Making with Lakota Youth Stay
DESCRIPTION:Spend an exciting afternoon at Arts Collaborative Medford drawing\, painting\, and collaging alongside nine students from Lakota YouthStay\, a Medford-based home-stay program with youth from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. In this arts exchange\, we’ll take a look at a variety of historical and contemporary self-portraits to get our creative juices flowing\, then proceed with a quick creative writing and collaging exercise to encourage us to think about objects\, people\, and our environment that makes you\, you. How do you see yourself and what represents you beyond your appearance? Each youth will create individual 12″x16” self portrait mixed media paintings that will be displayed at the Charlotte and William Bloomberg Medford Public Library over the summer\, with a community reception on July 8th from 4:30-6pm. During the workshop\, youth will have access to a variety of materials including paint\, pastels\, stencils\, fabric\, yarn\, and other 3D materials\, and are encouraged to experiment with a variety of techniques including collage\, mark-making\, layering\, stitching\, foiling\, and more. \n  \nLed By: Talia Connelly \nFee: $35 \nThis workshop is for Middle School Aged Children

DESCRIPTION:Learn about modern poetry with short poems from some of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth century. We’ll listen to or read the poems\, share initial impressions\, and discuss whatever questions or themes emerge. The texts will be provided at the meeting—no homework required! \nIn July we’ll feature Philippe Jaccottet of France and Lorine Niedecker of the United States. \nThis free salon-style series welcomes everyone—whether you’re well-versed in poetry or simply curious. Drop in for one session or all; each 90-minute meetup stands on its own. Prior experience with poetry will be helpful but isn’t required. An interest in innovative techniques\, tolerance for ambiguity\, and appreciation of different points of view will also be helpful. \nEmphasis will be given to poets who bore witness to social upheaval and shaped modern literature with their responses to historical events. We will take a global perspective and include many writers in different languages who have been translated into English. Brief introductions to the poets will be offered\, but no stuffy lectures; we’ll make connections and discoveries together through our sharing of questions and observations. \nHosted by Gary Roberts\, a poet and co-founder of Arts Collaborative Medford\, as part of our literary arts initiative.
