SUMMARY:Climate Change Book Club: The Light Pirate
DESCRIPTION:Planet and Pages\, the Medford Public Library’s Climate Change Book Club\, meets to discuss “The Light Pirate\,” a novel by Lily Brooks-Dalton. Told in four parts — power\, water\, light and time — “The Light Pirate” mirrors the rhythms of the elements and the sometimes quick\, sometimes slow dissolution of the world as we know it. It is a meditation on the changes we would rather not see\, the future we would rather not greet\, and a call back to the beauty and violence of an untamable wilderness. Books will be available to borrow from the library\, and registration will be available through the library’s online calendar. After a summer break\, the club will resume meeting in September. \nLed by green entrepreneur and Trove Green Provisions owner Clare Flaherty\, the club reads both non-fiction and fiction books about climate change and explores topics such as global warming\, plastic pollution\, environmental inequity\, and proposed solutions to combat their effects. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Medford Public Library’s 150th Anniversary Celebration\, historian Dee Morris presents the talk\, “The Mansion on High Street: A History.” In 1875\, the Magoun family sold their mansion to the Town of Medford for $1. The town pledged to use it “for the purpose of a free public circulating library with a free public Reading Room and Art Gallery.” The building served as the Medford Public Library until 1957. Morris will share great stories about the legendary Magouns\, their spectacular gift\, and the vibrant people of our community. DESCRIPTION:Host Terry E. Carter and Calvin Lindsay Jr. will take a tour down memory lane in tonight’s edition of the West Medford Community Center’s Words and Music program\, titled “Best Friends Forever.” Lindsay is an accomplished and highly decorated filmmaker and former series producer at WGBH’s landmark “Say Brother” program. He also served on the WMCC board and was one of the driving forces on getting the new center built. Join Terry and Calvin in the first hour as they share stories and tell a few tales “out of school” on the stage at 111 Arlington St.\, a place that both men considered their second home during their boyhood days. \nThe second hour will feature native vocalist Anita “A.J.” Wood\, a versatile vocalist with roots in musical theater and a cappella who more recently has dived into jazz. A big fan of the classic American songbook\, Wood fronts a cool trio that includes Steve Linscott and also saxophone and Carolyn “Sue” Howard on piano. \nThe program also will be carried live by Medford Community Media on the city’s cable access stations (Comcast Channel 9 and Verizon Channel 47) and live-streamed on the WMCC Facebook page. \nThe West Medford Community Center launched Words and Music in 2017. The program starts off with a discussion on a valuable aspect of the community\, followed by a performance by a local musician or musicians.
