DESCRIPTION:The Granoff Music Center Colloquium series at Tufts University features Samantha Jones of Harvard University on her research on musicality in percussive dance. Focusing on the non-competitive and social styles of Old-Style Irish Step and sean-nós dancing\, she examines how musical and choreographic knowledge circulates through embodied modes of transmission. Oral mnemonics\, hand gestures\, notation – these transmission methods offer rich sites for examining the interaction of embodied cognition\, performance aesthetics\, and community. In framing these techniques as musical pedagogies\, Jones offers new ways of conceptualizing musical experience in dance. \n  \n

SUMMARY:MHS Rainbow Mosaic Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Students from Medford High School and the Medford Vocational Technical High School have designed a mosaic\, themed “Over the Rainbow\,” to celebrate the incredible rainbow of the MHS/VTHS community. It is being created by members of the Medford student body and community and will be the first permanent artwork to be displayed on the exterior walls of the MHS building. Community members are invited to help complete the mosaic at this workshop; no experience with mosaics is required. The work will be facilitated by mosaic artist Susan Altman from ArtsMedford and by at least one teacher at Medford High School. Children (except students at MHS) must be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:Murder at Harvard Medical School
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a talk by Dennis J. Curran\, a retired justice from the Massachusetts Superior Court\, on the 1850 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court case Commonwealth v. Webster. This case\, about the murder of Boston physician George Parkman at Harvard Medical School\, established the legal principal “proof beyond a reasonable doubt\,” a requirement since adopted by most other states. This was the first trial to use forensic science\, forensic evidence\, forensic experts and dental forensic evidence in trial. It also defined “murder” and “manslaughter.”  Few\, if any\, cases have produced the number of fundamental legal principles used throughout our nation today as Commonwealth v. Webster.  This presentation will address the compelling and intriguing facts behind this landmark decision on so many issues in criminal jurisprudence. Register through Eventbrite. \n
