DESCRIPTION:The West Medford Community Center begins a new season of its Words and Music program with “A Changing of the Guard\,” introducing the City of Medford’s second poet laureate\, Vijaya Sundaram\, who began her two-year term on July 1. In the first hour’s Words segment\, Vijaya will join her predecessor\, Terry E. Carter\, for a lively and lyrical conversation about her life as a teacher\, artist\, musician\, writer\, and the city’s new ambassador of poetry. \nThe Music segment will feature a performance by Erin Hogan\, a singer\, songwriter and musician whose extensive training includes heavy influences in classical music\, opera\, jazz\, folk\, and the Great American Songbook. She’ll be accompanied in her first WMCC appearance by bassist Ike Sturm. \nSeating is limited and masking is welcomed. The program also will be carried live on the Medford Community Media YouTube channel\, and on MCM community access television (Ch. 3-Comcast\, Ch. 47-Verizon). \nThe West Medford Community Center launched Words and Music in 2017. Despite her enthusiasm\, she will have to redouble her efforts to escape from her condition and be accepted by the director of the school\, Marianne Belage (Maïwenn)\, the guarantor of traditions and the bearer of a secret that links her to the little ballerina. Running time is 1 hour\, 35 minutes. \nFree and open to all. DESCRIPTION:The closing of Johnny D’s Uptown in Somerville left a big hole that needed filled: a place for blues musicians to jam on Sundays and support one another. That is the spirit The Porch fosters with its People’s Jam. Bass amp and two guitar amps provided\, along with DIs\, vocal mics and horn mics. Just come in and sign up. Each group of jammers plays three songs and no one repeats until all players have had a turn. Admission is free. Note: This will be the final People’s Jam at the Porch\, which is closing after five years in Medford.
