DESCRIPTION:Historian Dee Morris introduces a four-part series\, “Medford’s Compass Points\,” in which she will discuss the city’s four “cardinal point” neighborhoods\, starting with North Medford.  Also known as Fulton Heights\, North Medford embraces a rocky terrain dotted with many compact homes that date to the 1920s. Close by the Middlesex Fells Reservation\, this tree-filled neighborhood features curving streets named for the governors of Massachusetts. The shore of Wright’s Pond was once supported Filmland City\, a silent film enterprise that hoped to become a Hollywood of the East. Early residents prided themselves on their independence\, including Sarah Bradlee Fulton\, hero of the Revolution. \nOther presentations in the series (all on Tuesdays) will be South Medford on May 23; East Medford on June 27; and West Medford on July 18. DESCRIPTION:Medford High School tennis coach Drew Hendrickson is leading a tennis and ELA program for ages 6 through 14 that will offer fast-paced and fun tennis classes coupled with a reading and writing program led by a certified teacher. The tennis portion will be fun\, instructive and support teamwork and sportsmanship. Students will learn all basic tennis skills\, participate in team-based activities\, and engage in healthy competitions every day. The reading and writing component will consist of silent and group reading and daily writing activities. Each student will have a journal where students will free write\, respond to writing prompts\, write poems\, and engage in other writing activities. The program will take place at Playstead Park from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. on six consecutive Thursdays\, from April 27 through June 1. Cost is $210 for Medford residents\, $240 for non-residents. DESCRIPTION:The Medford Public Library invites you to join David Ferriero\, former archivist of the United States\, and Marjorie Bloomberg Tiven of Bloomberg Philanthropies for a conversation about the role and future of libraries and archives. Today more than ever\, these institutions are essential\, preserving intellectual freedom\, providing access to information\, and preserving history. \nFerriero was the 10th archivist of the United States\, serving from 2009 to 2022. Before joining the National Archives\, he served as the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries. He previously worked at MIT and at Duke University. \nTiven\, a Medford native\, is the founder and president of Global Cities\, Inc.\, a program of Bloomberg Philanthropies\, working in more than 50 urban public school districts worldwide. Under Tiven’s leadership\, more than 105\,000 students — including several hundred Medford seventh graders — have interacted with each other in digital classrooms. She formerly was the mayoral representative on the board of the New York Public Library and currently serves on the board of the National Archives Foundation. \nRegister through the library’s online calendar to be assured of a seat.

DESCRIPTION:The Medford High Drama Club presents the first of four performances of the musical “Urinetown.” In a Gotham-like city\, a terrible water shortage\, caused by a 20-year drought\, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities\, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people\, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom. It’s a satire of the legal system\, capitalism\, social irresponsibility\, populism\, environmental collapse\, privatization of natural resources\, bureaucracy\, municipal politics\, and musical theatre itself. Tickets are the door will be $10 for students\, $15 for adults; they may be reserved by emailing Riley Jones at rjones@medford.k12.ma.us. Additional performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday\, April 28\, and 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday\, April 29.

SUMMARY:Tufts Opera Ensemble: Three Operatic Morsels
DESCRIPTION:The Tufts Opera Ensemble\, under the direction of Carol Mastrodomenico and Thomas Stumpf\, presents the first of two performances of the prize-winning one-act comic opera “An Embarrassing Position” (2010) by Boston composer Dan Shore. The delightful libretto is based on a short 1895 play by American author Kate Chopin. They will also perform “Bon Appetit” by Lee Hoiby\, based on an episode of Julia Child’s 1960 TV show “The French Chef\,” and “Scrapbookers” by Leanna Kirchoff\, with a libretto by Leanna Kirchoff. \nNote: Due to university COVID regulations\, live audience attendees at Tufts Music events must be prepared to present a Tufts ID or COVID vaccination card showing that they have been vaccinated and boosted.
