DESCRIPTION:The Medford Chess Club invites you to its weekly meet-up in Medford Square. If the weather is favorable\, the group will meet outdoors at the gazebo at the Saltonstall Building near the Medford Senior Center. If the weather is poor\, the group meets in the second-floor gallery at the Charlotte & William Bloomberg Medford Public Library. The club has chess sets\, chess clocks\, and helpful members who are willing to teach you the rules if you’re new to the game. Players of all ages and skill levels are welcome\, but those under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult or mature older sibling. There are no membership dues or fees to play. SUMMARY:Exhibition Closing Event: re:imagining collections
DESCRIPTION:Tufts University Art Galleries concludes the exhibition “re:imagining collections” with a curator tour and a performance by artist and choreographer NIC Kay. In the exhibition\, five artists reconsider and readdress Tufts’ collection of relatively understudied antiquities from the Americas and the Mediterranean. The collection includes some 200 objects that date from the fifth century BCE to the seventh century CE\, including early Greco-Roman ceramics and stone carvings\, and a trove of pre-Columbian vessels\, jewelry and textiles. \nEach artist in this exhibition — Ali Cherri\, Nicole Cherubini\, Lily Cox-Richard\, NIC Kay\, and SANGREE — has developed new installations and performances based on or inspired by the collection. DESCRIPTION:The closing of Johnny D’s Uptown in Somerville left a big hole that needed filled: a place for blues musicians to jam on Sundays and support one another. That is the spirit The Porch fosters with its People’s Jam. Bass amp and two guitar amps provided\, along with DIs\, vocal mics and horn mics. Just come in and sign up. Each group of jammers plays three songs and no one repeats until all players have had a turn. Admission is free. DESCRIPTION:Historian Dee Morris introduces a four-part series\, “Medford’s Compass Points\,” in which she will discuss the city’s four “cardinal point” neighborhoods\, starting with North Medford.  Also known as Fulton Heights\, North Medford embraces a rocky terrain dotted with many compact homes that date to the 1920s. Close by the Middlesex Fells Reservation\, this tree-filled neighborhood features curving streets named for the governors of Massachusetts. The shore of Wright’s Pond was once supported Filmland City\, a silent film enterprise that hoped to become a Hollywood of the East. Early residents prided themselves on their independence\, including Sarah Bradlee Fulton\, hero of the Revolution. \nOther presentations in the series (all on Tuesdays) will be South Medford on May 23; East Medford on June 27; and West Medford on July 18.
