SUMMARY:ACM World Poetry Salon
DESCRIPTION:Learn about modern poetry with short poems from some of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth century. We’ll listen to or read the poems\, share initial impressions\, and discuss whatever questions or themes emerge. The texts will be provided at the meeting—no homework required! \nIn January we’ll feature two American poets: Elizabeth Bishop and James Merrill. \nThis free salon-style series welcomes everyone—whether you’re well-versed in poetry or simply curious. Drop in for one session or all; each 90-minute meetup stands on its own. Prior experience with poetry will be helpful but isn’t required. An interest in innovative techniques\, tolerance for ambiguity\, and appreciation of different points of view will also be helpful. \nEmphasis will be given to poets who bore witness to social upheaval and shaped modern literature with their responses to historical events. We will take a global perspective and include many writers in different languages who have been translated into English. Brief introductions to the poets will be offered\, but no stuffy lectures; we’ll make connections and discoveries together through our sharing of questions and observations. \nHosted by Gary Roberts\, a poet and co-founder of Arts Collaborative Medford\, as part of our literary arts initiative. Bring your coffee\, tea\, or notebook and join us for a relaxed\, open conversation about how poetry can reflect\, resist\, and reimagine the world around us.

SUMMARY:New MHSM Historical Book Group
DESCRIPTION:This book group focusing on history readings will be launched in January with a goal of creating new opportunities to gather at the headquarters at MHSM. Learn about people and events that shaped the world we live in\, and share stories (both historic and personal) at the local level. The inaugural book will be The Killer Angels\, a novel by Michael Shaara that won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The book draws heavily from primary source materials to bring to life many key participants and events in a complicated American Civil War battle that occurred at a time when the fate of our nation hung in the balance as violence replaced discourse. Along with discussions that add depth to this captivating story\, readers will have opportunities to hold and examine pieces of this history from the MHSM collections. Group members will read the book in four sections and meet weekly to discuss these at MHSM from 7PM to 9PM\, on Thursdays\, January 15\, 22\, 29 and February 5\, 2026. The book is widely available in paperback\, hardback\, e-book and audiobook formats. Register here.  Space is limited.

SUMMARY:(How to Avoid) Death in Glacier National Park with Randi Minetor on ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Join us to discuss the 10th anniversary (and fully revised & updated 2nd edition!) of Randi’s book\, “Death in Glacier National Park: Stories of Accidents and Foolhardiness in the Crown of the Continent”. Randi is the  author of eight books (working on the 9th!) in the non-fiction “Death in the National Parks” series\, explores the fatal mistakes people make when they venture into unfamiliar wilderness. Collected here are some the most gripping accounts in park history and new stories about people losing the battle with natural forces or perishing from their own folly. Be ready for your upcoming summer vacation plans with this important and\, probably\, humorous presentation! \nBorn and raised in Rochester\, NY\, Randi Minetor discovered the backcountry wonders of America’s national parks in 1992 with her husband\, photographer/lighting designer Nic Minetor. That first trip changed her life\, and by 2000\, the Minetors had pledged to see all 430 national parks in their lifetimes. They found a way to subsidize this passion in 2006\, when they began writing and photographing books on the parks for The Globe Pequot Press (now Rowman & Littlefield). Today Randi has written more than 90 books\, including seven books in the nonfiction Death in the National Parks series\, ten hiking guides in New York State\, several bird-finding guides\, and even reference books on health topics. To date\, they have visited 364 national parks. In addition\, Nic’s photography appears in eight Quick Reference Guides to the Birds\, Trees\, and Wildflowers of New York City and New York State\, and the Trees and Wildflowers of the Mid-Atlantic States. The Minetors live in Rochester\, NY.

SUMMARY:The Invention of Charlotte Brontë with Graham Watson on ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be delving into the primary sources – the manuscripts and letters – that informed Graham’s book “The Invention of Charlotte Brontë: A New Life”. Join us  as Graham discusses Charlotte’s life – the myths vs. reality – as well as his own research and writing of this fantastic book! \nAbout the book: Charlotte Brontë had a life as seemingly dramatic as her heroine Jane Eyre. Turning her back on her tragic past\, Charlotte reinvented herself as an acclaimed author\, a mysterious celebrity\, and a passionate lover. Doing so meant burning many bridges\, but her sudden death left her friends and admirers with more questions than answers. Tasked with telling the truth about Brontë’s life\, her friend\, the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell\, uncovered secrets of illicit love\, family discord\, and professional rivalries more incredible than any fiction. The result\, a tell-all biography\, was so scandalous it was banned and rewritten twice in six months—but not before it had given birth to the legend of the Brontës. Through evaluating key events as well as introducing new archival material into the story\, The Invention of Charlotte Brontë presents a different\, darker take on one of the most famous women writers of the nineteenth century\, showing Charlotte to be a strong but flawed individual.. \nAbout the Presenter: Graham Watson is a specialist in the Brontës and Elizabeth Gaskell\, and he is currently researching Victorian literary identities at the University of Glasgow. He has published a number of papers in Brontë Studies and has recently joined the journal’s peer-review board. This is his first book. Graham lives in Glasgow.

SUMMARY:World Poetry Salon
DESCRIPTION:Learn about modern poetry with short poems from some of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth century. We’ll listen to or read the poems\, share initial impressions\, and discuss whatever questions or themes emerge. The texts will be provided at the meeting—no homework required! \nIn March we’ll feature Jorge Luis Borges of Argentina and Philip Larkin of England.

SUMMARY:Where The Light Came In: Judith Black Book Signing and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:The most consequential moments are rarely dramatic. What stays with us\, what makes us feel truly seen\, is often small\, domestic\, and endlessly repeated. Judith Black’s photographs\, made at home in the early 1980s of her four young children and their stepfather\, remind us of this simple truth. \nIn 1980\, after a divorce\, Judith moved her family to Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, and took a job at the darkroom at MIT. Their home wasn’t grand\, but it was theirs\, a place to begin again. Not long after settling in\, they found a worn old armchair left on the side of the road and gave it a place by the window. It became a spot of rest and quiet theatre\, a vantage point from which Judith watched her children grow\, day by day\, frame by frame. \nThis new book gathers every photograph she made of that single chair. What begins as cast-off furniture becomes\, through her attentive eye\, a kind of threshold: a simple thing that holds a whole world. There is a truth here that is easy to overlook\, that by staying close to the ordinary\, by returning to the same corner of a room\, we might learn to see more clearly. And that the measure of a life is so often found not in grand gestures\, but in the worn fabric of a chair\, the shifting light\, the hush of children growing older under our watch.

SUMMARY:Springward Poetry Festival Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Springward Poetry Festival\, a weekend of poetry-focused interactive programming for all ages. We aim to foster an environment where poets\, appreciators of poetry\, and those curious about the art form can celebrate National Poetry Month\, learn about poetry\, and connect with each other. \nStart with our ongoing monthly World Poetry Salon (free)\, on Thursday night\, April 9. The festival then kicks off on Friday night\, April 10\, at 6:00 with a public reception and a set of poetry readings\, including by Max Heinegg\, Medford’s Poet Laureate. \nOn Saturday\, April 11\, we’ll offer a daylong lineup of programming\, with readings\, workshops\, and more! Featured during this year’s festival will be Black Ocean\, an award-winning independent publisher with Medford roots\, as it celebrates its 20th anniversary. We will highlight Massachusetts and regional poets as headlining performers throughout the weekend. There will be an Open Mic for community members to share their work. We will offer workshops proposed and led by local poets to provide attendees with a safe\, communal space for poetic exploration. More program details will posted here later in March. \nGeneral admission for the Springward Festival is $20 for adults and $5 for students\, for the entire weekend.
