SUMMARY:World Poetry Salon
DESCRIPTION:Learn about modern poetry with short poems from some of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth century. We’ll listen to or read the poems\, share initial impressions\, and discuss whatever questions or themes emerge. The texts will be provided at the meeting—no homework required! \nIn September we’ll feature Aimé Césaire of Martinique and Derek Walcott of Saint Lucia. \nThis free salon-style series welcomes everyone—whether you’re well-versed in poetry or simply curious. Drop in for one session or all; each 90-minute meetup stands on its own. Prior experience with poetry will be helpful but isn’t required. An interest in innovative techniques\, tolerance for ambiguity\, and appreciation of different points of view will also be helpful. \nEmphasis will be given to poets who bore witness to social upheaval and shaped modern literature with their responses to historical events. We will take a global perspective and include many writers in different languages who have been translated into English. Brief introductions to the poets will be offered\, but no stuffy lectures; we’ll make connections and discoveries together through our sharing of questions and observations. \nHosted by Gary Roberts\, a poet and co-founder of Arts Collaborative Medford\, as part of our literary arts initiative. Bring your coffee\, tea\, or notebook and join us for a relaxed\, open conversation about how poetry can reflect\, resist\, and reimagine the world around us.

SUMMARY:(how to avoid) "Death on Mount Washington" with Author Randi Minetor (Zoom Program)
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, author Randi Minetor! Join us to discuss the Death on Mount Washington: Stories of Accidents and Foolhardiness on the Northeast’s Highest Peak. Randi is the author of eight books (working on the 9th!) in the non-fiction “Death in the National Parks” series\, explores the fatal mistakes people make when they venture into unfamiliar wilderness. Collected here are some the most gripping accounts in park history and new stories about people losing the battle with natural forces or perishing from their own folly. Be ready for your upcoming vacation plans with this important and humorous presentation! \nClick here to register for this program! \nOn Mount Washington\, it’s lack of preparation\, not the mountain\, that kills. The weather is highly changeable with wind gusts of 140 mph and -35 degree temps. Then there are the avalanches and icefalls. Combine this with inexperienced hikers in t-shirts and flip flops and things can get ugly fast. \n  \nDeath on Mount Washington describes the circumstances behind the tragic tales of those who have lost their lives on the mountain. No one–not even the most experienced mountaineer or pilot–is safe from the mountain’s mercurial weather conditions. Learn from the mistakes of others in the comfort and safety of your armchair and remember to respect Mount Washington on your next ski trip.

SUMMARY:MHSM: Black Dahlia\, Murders\, Mystery\, and Madness in Midcentury Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:William J. Mann’s Black Dahlia: Murder\, Monsters\, and Madness in Midcentury Hollywood has been praised by reviewers for offering the first account of the notorious crime that’s more focused on the victim than her killer. Critics lauded Mann’s ability to reconstruct the life of Elizabeth Short without exploiting her tragic death. The Wall Street Journal highlighted his skill in capturing the “historical environment that surrounded the crime… Mr. Mann conveys the era’s disillusionment and its rising tideof violence and misogyny.” Such context\, the Journal noted\, “is crucial to an understanding of Short’s life—which [Mann] reconstructs with compassionate acuity.” The Washington Post wrote\, “Mann deftly sifts through the sensationalized journalism\, preconceived notions\, myths\, and misunderstandings surrounding the case to uncover the truth about Elizabeth Short like no book before.” The Los Angeles Times focused on Mann’s effort to dismantle the pop-culture mythos surrounding Short\, quoting the author: “Elizabeth is very\, very different from the ‘Black Dahlia.’ They’re separate entities\, and we need to acknowledge that to comprehend what happened both before and after the murder.” \nPrevious chroniclers have been more interested in the killer than the victim\, boasting of solving the case but putting forward unsatisfying or unsupporting evidence. Mann suggests a couple possible solutions to the crime and presents compelling evidence to support his theories. “But solving the crime wasn’t my goal\,” Mann says. “Understanding it\, and understanding Elizabeth\, was my goal.” Short’s death was gruesome and sensational and her short life ordinary and unremarkable. “But her life\,” Mann says\, “is still more important than her death.” \nWilliam J. Mann will discuss his process in researching and writing his book and provide a portrait of the young Medford woman at the heart of one of America’s most notorious unsolved crimes. \nAbout the speaker: \nWilliam J. Mann\, Author and Adjunct Professor of History\, Central Connecticut State University.
