SUMMARY:Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents the program “Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg\,” with John Wooding\, emeritus professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts\, Lowell. Richard Gregg was Gandhi’s confidant and friend for more than 20 years. He was the son of a Congregationalist minister who was born and lived in Medford and was educated at Harvard University. He worked as a labor lawyer and arbitrator in Boston and Chicago before moving to India to work and study with Gandhi. Gregg was driven by a deep sense of justice\, a commitment to nonviolent and humane practices toward people and the planet\, and a steady belief in the possibilities of peace. In 1936 he wrote “The Power of Non-Violence\,” perhaps the leading book on pacifism of its day and the signature guide to peaceful protest. Register through the library’s new online calendar. \n

SUMMARY:What’s Faith Got to do With It? A Personal History
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents “What’s Faith Got to do With It? A Walk of Faith\, A Curious Mind\, and A Courageous Heart: A Personal Look at My Journey to Shiloh Baptist Church” with Pastor Gerald E. Bell. This presentation at the library will focus on the rich 127-year history of Shiloh Baptist Church as a cornerstone institution in the African American community in West Medford\, and on the future of this important house of worship in Medford. It will also include a chronological look at Pastor Bell’s journey as a 7-year-old Indiana boy survivor of senseless gun violence to a 65-year-old dreamer and pastor who is not finished yet. Says Bell\, “To describe myself as having a courageous heart is both arrogant and legitimate because fear has been my constant companion.” Registration is required through the library’s online calendar. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Medford Public Library is co-sponsoring the program Even More Haunted Lighthouses of New England with Jeremy D’Entremont\, president and historian of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Lighthouses and ghost stories often seem to go hand in hand. SUMMARY:Abolitionist Practices: Then + Now
DESCRIPTION:Tufts University Art Galleries presents the program “Abolitionist Practices: Then + Now\,” a panel discussion in conjunction with the current TUAG exhibition\, “Tomashi Jackson: Across the Universe.” Panelists will be Nia Evans\, executive director of the Boston Ujima Project; Cierra Michele Peters\, director of communications\, culture and enfranchisement at the Boston Ujima Project; Dayna Cunningham\, dean of the Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts; and the artist\, Tomashi Jackson. SUMMARY:Salem Witchcraft Trials: What Really Happened?
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents “The Salem Witchcraft Trials: What Really Happened?” with the Hon. Dennis J. Curran. The Salem Witchcraft trials constitute one of the most mysterious and fascinating events in American history. Discover the “perfect storm” of conditions that culminated in tragic circumstances that have haunted us for centuries. Judge Curran will explode five myths behind the outbreak of allegations of witchcraft in colonial America\, examine the villains and heroes involved\, and try to determine the reasons behind a raging mass hysteria. Whether living in 17th-century New England or today\, people are susceptible to the same dark fears and influences. The Salem Witchcraft Trials serve as a powerful reminder of the frailty of the human condition. RSVP through the library’s online calendar. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Medford Public Library is co-sponsoring the online program “The Indigenous Old World — An Exploration of Pre-Colombian North America.” Explore the worlds of the Indigenous peoples of North America before European colonization. The ancient and medieval communities of North America were fed by agriculture. Moreover\, Indigenous Americans actively managed their environment and participated in long-distance exchange networks. The program will be led by Christoph Strobel\, department chair and professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He is the author of “War and Colonization in the Early American Northeast”; “Native Americans of New England”; and “The Global Atlantic: 1400 to 1900.” Register through the library’s online calendar for the Zoom link. \n  \n
