Produced by the Association of Black Citizens of Lexington\, the program explores the often overlooked role of Black men and women\, like third-generation Lexington resident Eli Burdoo\, played in the Revolutionary War. Burdoo was an active combatant on April 19\, 1775. He was a grandson of Ann and Philip Burdoo who were married in Medford in 1704 and afterward purchased 40 acres of land in Cambridge Farms. Eli Burdoo’s mother\, Phebe\, died before he was 2 years old; his father\, Moses\, was a veteran of the French and Indian War. Explore Eli’s journey from indentured orphan at 5 years old to member of Captain Parker’s Lexington Militia by age 17. SUMMARY:Patriots' Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The City of Medford invites you to Medford Square for the annual Patriots’ Day celebration. Events begin at 10 a.m. at the Salem Street Burying Ground next to Riverside Plaza as tribute is paid to the soldiers who lost their lives during the Revolutionary War. Words from Medford historian Dee Morris will accompany wreath laying on Patriots’ graves. Then march through Medford Square with Captain Isaac Hall and Mistress Hall to the historic Isaac Hall House at 43 High Street\, awaiting the arrival of Paul Revere on horseback\, just as he did 250 years ago to notify the local militia of British troop movement. There will be a dramatic reading of Longfellow’s poem “Paul Revere’s Ride\,” tours of Hall House (now the Islamic Cultural Center of Medford)\, and Ye Old Arcade Colonial Activities for children sponsored by Looking Back at Medford History Inc. in collaboration with the ICCM. Paul Revere will continue west on horseback and visit the Paul Revere Restaurant at 447 High Street in West Medford. \n

As a composer deeply entangled in the political and artistic currents of his time\, Shostakovich was a towering cultural figure of the Cold War era. His works were alternately celebrated\, scrutinized\, and politicized by both Soviet and Western audiences. SUMMARY:Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents the program “Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg\,” with John Wooding\, emeritus professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts\, Lowell. Richard Gregg was Gandhi’s confidant and friend for more than 20 years. He was the son of a Congregationalist minister who was born and lived in Medford and was educated at Harvard University. He worked as a labor lawyer and arbitrator in Boston and Chicago before moving to India to work and study with Gandhi. Gregg was driven by a deep sense of justice\, a commitment to nonviolent and humane practices toward people and the planet\, and a steady belief in the possibilities of peace. In 1936 he wrote “The Power of Non-Violence\,” perhaps the leading book on pacifism of its day and the signature guide to peaceful protest. Register through the library’s new online calendar. \n

It will also include a chronological look at Pastor Bell’s journey as a 7-year-old Indiana boy survivor of senseless gun violence to a 65-year-old dreamer and pastor who is not finished yet. DESCRIPTION:Project 2025 has been in the news lately\, but for some\, it seemed to come out of nowhere. In this online program co-sponsored by the Medford Public Library\, join Professor Brian Conley of Suffolk University to delve into the history of this document and its origins during the Reagan years. Edwin Feulner\, who led the Heritage Foundation when the book was first written as “Mandate for Leadership\,” explains that the idea for such a policy book originated at a 1979 meeting of Heritage’s board. Professor Conley will help participants understand the origins of the mandate that led to the current Project 2025 document. Brian M. Conley\, Ph.D. is a professor and chair of the Political Science & Legal Studies Department at Suffolk University. As program director of Suffolk’s Masters in Applied Politics and MA in Global Public Policy\, as he has researched and written “The Rise of the Republican Right: From Goldwater to Reagan.” Dr. Conley\, an expert in electoral politics\, political parties\, and political marketing and branding. DESCRIPTION:Today is the final day of the 2024 tour season for the Royall House & Slave Quarters. The museum offers guided tours at 1\, 2 and 3 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday. Admission for guided tours of the mansion is $15 for adults\, and $10 for seniors and students. Admission is always free for Royall House & Slave Quarters members\, and free for children age 12 and under\, EBT or WIC cardholders\, Blue Star Families\, and Massachusetts Teachers Association members and retirees. Admission to the Slave Quarters\, which also houses the archaeological exhibit\, gift shop\, and restrooms\, is free of charge. No reservations are required for groups of fewer than 10 people. Groups of 10 or more are considered group tours and must have a reservation. Visit the Group Tours page on the RHSQ website for group rates and scheduling. \nIn the eighteenth century\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters was home to the largest slaveholding family in Massachusetts and the enslaved Africans who made their lavish way of life possible. Today\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters is a museum whose architecture\, household items\, archaeological artifacts\, and programs bear witness to intertwined stories of wealth and bondage\, set against the backdrop of America’s quest for independence. The Slave Quarters is the only remaining such structure in the northern United States\, and the Royall House is among the finest colonial-era buildings in New England.
