SUMMARY:The American Revolution: Catalyst for Fundamental Changes
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a program at the library\, “The American Revolution: Catalyst for Fundamental Changes\,” with historian James Bennett. Did Medford have an American Revolution? The city’s  experience of the American Revolution as a war is a well-documented and proud chapter of the community’s history. But to what extent was there a revolution in the hearts and minds of Medford’s people of the kind that John Adams described in 1918 when he wrote: “But what do We mean by the American Revolution? Do We mean the American War? The Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the Minds and Hearts of the People.” \nIn this presentation\, James Bennett will examine late 18th-century primary sources from Medford to shed light on the fundamental nature of how the people of Medford experienced political change during the tumultuous years of the revolutionary and early national periods. For Medford\, was the American Revolution simply a war to remove royal authority from the apex of their political system\, or was it a catalyst for a much more fundamental change in the values of their political system as a whole? This presentation will point to some possible answers to that question\, and spark conversations in the community about what that historical experience 250 years ago means for us today. \nBennett has worked as a public historian\, researcher\, actor\, and teacher for over 25 years. He currently works as a research fellow for Revolutionary Spaces\, the nonprofit that stewards Boston’s Old State House and Old South Meeting House. \nRegister using the library’s online calendar. \n

SUMMARY:No More Curse! A History of the Red Sox
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Public Library is co-sponsoring an online program\, “No More Curse! A History of the Red Sox” with author and historian David Kruh. Based on his research for his musical “The Curse is Reversed!” (originally titled “The Curse of the Bambino” when it premiered in 2001)\, Kruh will take you to the roots of Boston baseball\, when\, just like today\, the team captured the hearts of the people of Boston. He’ll look back at the real story behind Harry Frazee and his sale of slugger Babe Ruth. Relive the (sometimes frustrating) saga of the Boston Red Sox and their ultimately successful struggle for a World Series championship. Register through the library’s online calendar to receive the Zoom link. \n

SUMMARY:Decoding Shostakovich: Music Diplomacy and U.S.-Soviet Cultural Exchanges
DESCRIPTION:The Tufts University Department of Music\, the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy\, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra present a solo violin performance by Victor Romanul and a panel discussion exploring the role of music in cultural diplomacy\, focusing on Dmitri Shostakovich and U.S.-Soviet cultural exchanges. As a composer deeply entangled in the political and artistic currents of his time\, Shostakovich was a towering cultural figure of the Cold War era. His works were alternately celebrated\, scrutinized\, and politicized by both Soviet and Western audiences. The panelists will examine the historical and political dimensions of U.S.-Russia musical connections\, the broader significance of cultural diplomacy\, and the ways in which Shostakovich’s life and music reflected and influenced Cold War tensions\, offering insights into the enduring power of culture in international relations. \nPanelists will be Arik Burakovsky\, associate director of the Fletcher School’s Russia and Eurasia Program (host); Alan Henrikson\, emeritus professor of diplomatic history; Carla Canales\, cultural diplomacy fellow; Gabrielle Cornish\, assistant professor of musicology at the Mead Witter School of Music\, University of Wisconsin–Madison; and Ivan Kurilla\, international scholar in residence at Wellesley College. \nReserve free tickets on the event web page. \n

SUMMARY:A House Restored: Tragedies and Triumphs of Saving a New England Colonial
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a talk at the library by Lee McColgan on his book\, “A House Restored: The Tragedies and Triumphs of Saving a New England Colonial.” Old houses share their secrets only if they survive. Trading the corporate ladder for a stepladder\, McColgan commits to preserving the ramshackle Loring House\, built in 1702 in Pembroke\, Mass.\, using period materials and methods and on a holiday deadline. But his enchantment withers as he discovers the massive repairs it needs. He fights deteriorating bricks\, frozen pipes\, shattered windows\, a punctured foundation\, and even an airborne chimney cap while learning from a diverse cast of preservationists\, including a master mason named Irons\, a stone whisperer\, and the Window Witch. But can he meet his deadline before family and friends arrive\, or will it all come crashing down? McColgan’s journey expertly examines our relationship to history through the homes we inhabit\, beautifully articulating the philosophy of preserving the past to find purpose for the future. SUMMARY:Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents the program “Gandhi’s American Friend: The Untold Story of Richard Gregg\,” with John Wooding\, emeritus professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts\, Lowell. Richard Gregg was Gandhi’s confidant and friend for more than 20 years. He was the son of a Congregationalist minister who was born and lived in Medford and was educated at Harvard University. He worked as a labor lawyer and arbitrator in Boston and Chicago before moving to India to work and study with Gandhi. Gregg was driven by a deep sense of justice\, a commitment to nonviolent and humane practices toward people and the planet\, and a steady belief in the possibilities of peace. In 1936 he wrote “The Power of Non-Violence\,” perhaps the leading book on pacifism of its day and the signature guide to peaceful protest. Register through the library’s new online calendar. \n

SUMMARY:What’s Faith Got to do With It? A Personal History
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents “What’s Faith Got to do With It? A Walk of Faith\, A Curious Mind\, and A Courageous Heart: A Personal Look at My Journey to Shiloh Baptist Church” with Pastor Gerald E. Bell. This presentation at the library will focus on the rich 127-year history of Shiloh Baptist Church as a cornerstone institution in the African American community in West Medford\, and on the future of this important house of worship in Medford. It will also include a chronological look at Pastor Bell’s journey as a 7-year-old Indiana boy survivor of senseless gun violence to a 65-year-old dreamer and pastor who is not finished yet. Says Bell\, “To describe myself as having a courageous heart is both arrogant and legitimate because fear has been my constant companion.” Registration is required through the library’s online calendar. \n
