SUMMARY:Wingmasters: North American Birds of Prey (Ages 6+)
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about birds of prey at the library! Our friends from Wingmasters will be joining us for their New England Birds of Prey presentation. Birds of prey are also known as raptors\, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means “to seize”). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks\, falcons\, and owls\, and this presentation\, which incorporates 4-5 LIVE birds of prey\, all native to New England\, gives an overview of these different categories. The program will explain predation\, the birds’ place at the top of the food web\, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number\, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that Wingmasters cares for\, and explains why these species face an uncertain future. \nWingmasters is a partnership of two people dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett\, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild\, but in some cases the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these nonreleasable raptors\, and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994\, Wingmasters has presented over 10\,000 programs at schools\, libraries\, and museums throughout New England. \nFor the safety of everyone–including the birds–the birds will NOT be flown or touched by program attendees. \nPlease note: this program is for children ages 6+. It is not appropriate for children under 6. \nRegistration is required\, and anyone who intends on watching the presentation MUST register\, including adults. If more than 1 adult will be attending\, please add extra adults as “children” in the registration form. \nThis program is a part of the Flight Path project\, a collaboration between STARnet (a division of the Space Science Institute)\, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios\, and the Medford Public Library. Flight Path brings science-backed solutions for libraries and their communities to take action towards building a safer world for birds. SUMMARY:MHSM: Bill Monbouquette: One of a kind! A Red Sox and Medford Legend
DESCRIPTION:The city of Medford and Medford High School have produced many great athletes over the years\, both boys and girls\, track stars\, hockey players\, Olympians\, and more. Bill Monbouquette\, MHS 1955\, and former Red Sox All-Star pitcher\, is near to the top of that list. Mombo\, who was inducted into the Mustang Hall of Fame\, played soccer\, hockey\, and baseball in high school\, and it was in baseball that he rose to the highest of professional achievements. \nBill first appeared on the national baseball stage in 1954 at age-17\, between his junior and senior years at Medford High. At that time\, and for many years before and after\, the Hearst Newspapers sponsored a national contest of the best players throughout the US playing at the New York Giants Polo Grounds against the New York City schoolboy all-stars. Bill represented Massachusetts\, pitched two scoreless innings\, and he was named the tournament’s most valuable player! \nHis Hearst All-Star game heroics were followed by: \n\nSigning with the Boston Red Sox right after graduation from Medford High in 1955;\nWorking his way through the Red Sox minor league system from 1955 to June 1958;\nJoining the Red Sox in July 1958\, earning AL All-Star honors in 1960\, 1962 and 1963\, tossing a no-hitter in 1962 to go with 92 wins during 7 ½ Red Sox years through 1965;\nBeginning in 1966 pitching for the Tigers\, Yankees\, and Giants before retiring in 1968;\nBecoming a pitching coach in the minors and majors that lasted from 1969 to 2005!\n\nThose are just some of his many impressive statistics and achievements during a 50-year professional baseball career. But the story we will tell is of Bill the family guy\, the loyal friend\, the best possible teammate and mentor\, a tireless volunteer with the Jimmy Fund\, and Mombo the good neighbor who always made sure that people knew he was from Medford\, MA. \nIt’s a story worth telling and listening to! DESCRIPTION:The Royall House & Slave Quarters is offering free tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in celebration of Juneteenth. In the 18th century\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters was home to the largest slaveholding family in Massachusetts and the enslaved Africans who made their lavish way of life possible. Today\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters is a museum whose architecture\, household items\, archaeological artifacts\, and programs bear witness to intertwined stories of wealth and bondage\, set against the backdrop of America’s quest for independence. The Slave Quarters is the only remaining such structure in the northern United States\, and the Royall House is among the finest colonial-era buildings in New England.

SUMMARY:Teach In: Freedom of Expression and Banned Books
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate and support freedom of expression with a special Teach-In at the Medford Public Library featuring local authors who will read/perform short sections from banned or controversial books like “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury\, “1984” by George Orwell\, “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood\, “Maus” by Art Spielgelman\, and “The Trial” by Franz and others. Each author will briefly reflect on why these books continue to resonate. Readers include Medford Poet Laureate Vijaya Sundaram\, incoming Medford Poet Laureate Max Heinegg\, poet and professor Julia Lisella\, and Stephanie Schorow\, author of nine books on Boston history. The final speaker will be Christina L. Dobbs\, associate professor at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development\, who will speak on book banning through the United States. The event will include audience participation and refreshments.

The town pledged to use it “for the purpose of a free public circulating library with a free public Reading Room and Art Gallery.” The building served as the Medford Public Library until 1957. Morris will share great stories about the legendary Magouns\, their spectacular gift\, and the vibrant people of our community. Admission is always free for Royall House & Slave Quarters members; for children age 12 and under; for Massachusetts Teachers Association members and retirees; and for active duty military personnel and their families. Admission to the Slave Quarters\, which also houses the archaeological exhibit\, gift shop\, and restrooms\, is free of charge. No reservations are required for groups of fewer than 10 people. Groups of 10 or more are considered group tours and must have a reservation. Visit the Group Tours page on the RHSQ website for group rates and scheduling. \nIn the 18th century\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters was home to the largest slaveholding family in Massachusetts and the enslaved Africans who made their lavish way of life possible. Today\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters is a museum whose architecture\, household items\, archaeological artifacts\, and programs bear witness to intertwined stories of wealth and bondage\, set against the backdrop of America’s quest for independence. The Slave Quarters is the only remaining such structure in the northern United States\, and the Royall House is among the finest colonial-era buildings in New England.

DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a program at the library\, “The American Revolution: Catalyst for Fundamental Changes\,” with historian James Bennett. Did Medford have an American Revolution? The city’s  experience of the American Revolution as a war is a well-documented and proud chapter of the community’s history. But to what extent was there a revolution in the hearts and minds of Medford’s people of the kind that John Adams described in 1918 when he wrote: “But what do We mean by the American Revolution? Do We mean the American War? The Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the Minds and Hearts of the People.” \nIn this presentation\, James Bennett will examine late 18th-century primary sources from Medford to shed light on the fundamental nature of how the people of Medford experienced political change during the tumultuous years of the revolutionary and early national periods. For Medford\, was the American Revolution simply a war to remove royal authority from the apex of their political system\, or was it a catalyst for a much more fundamental change in the values of their political system as a whole? This presentation will point to some possible answers to that question\, and spark conversations in the community about what that historical experience 250 years ago means for us today. \nBennett has worked as a public historian\, researcher\, actor\, and teacher for over 25 years.
