You will reduce your workload while creating a paradise for the native birds and pollinators. \nAbout the Master Gardener: Gretel Anspach is a Trustee of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society\, a Lifetime Master Gardener with the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association\, and a recently-retired systems engineer for Raytheon. She won the MMGA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Gretel established and maintains a 20\,000 square foot food production garden that has provided fresh produce to the Marlboro and Maynard Food Pantries for the last ten years. Her primary interest and focus is always in the science behind horticulture.

DESCRIPTION:CHAT invites you to join us on April 8 at noon to hear from dissertation fellow Jo Michael Rezes for an original presentation featuring current research. \nJo Michael Rezes (they/them/theirs) is a theatremaker and educator in the Greater Boston Area. Their dissertation\, “Tastes Like AIDS: Sweet Aesthetics\, Bitter Humor\, and Viral Performances of HIV/AIDS “ examines the sensorial and affective dimensions of HIV/AIDS representations through taste—exploring how sweetness and bitterness structure cultural responses to queerness\, race\, and illness across transnational media. Their work taste-tests theatre\, visual art\, and archival ephemera to critique the colonial residues and nationalistic anxieties embedded in “AIDS flavors.” They have published writing in Polari Press\, Refinery29\, and Texas Theatre Journal with forthcoming chapters in Milestones in Queer US Theatre (Routledge)\, Visual Histories of Humour\, Health\, and the Body (Manchester University Press)\, Queers at the Table (Arsenal Pulp)\, and the Methuen Drama Book of Trans Plays (vol. 3). Online\, Jo is a TED Official Speaker (“A Playful Exploration of Gender Performance”) and runs an online cooking show (Jiffy Mae’s Sick Kitchen) with a cookbook in development featuring recipes found in queer\, chronically ill (and online) food cultures. \nBefore joining CHAT\, Jo was a Robyn Gittleman Graduate Teaching Fellow with the Tufts Experimental College. There\, Rezes has taught their course “Camp: Bad Taste\, Humor\, and Cult Classics” three times. As an instructor\, they received the award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 2022. Since then\, Rezes has held positions as Lecturer in Theatre at Boston College\, Affiliated Faculty in the MA/MFA Applied Theatre & Theatre Education program at Emerson College\, and Teaching Fellow at Harvard University. DESCRIPTION:Amalia Kussner was one of the preferred artists of Gilded Age New York especially in the 1890’s\, even though she painted miniature portraits. In the now critically acclaimed HBO series\, The Gilded Age\, Kussner actually painted 6 of the characters\, including Mrs. Astor\, the reigning matriarch of the social scene and her two daughters. Portraits were also done of the fictional Mrs. Russell and her daughter Gladys\, who closely matched the real-life persons – Alva Vanderbilt and her daughter\, Consuelo. Kussner even met Ward McAllister\, the arbiter of Gilded Age society\, advising her not to pursue her career as an artist\, and thankfully she ignored him. How Kussner interacted with these famous people\, and the portraits themselves\, can provide more insights into their lives. DESCRIPTION:We’ll be delving into the primary sources – the manuscripts and letters – that informed Graham’s book “The Invention of Charlotte Brontë: A New Life”. Join us  as Graham discusses Charlotte’s life – the myths vs. reality – as well as his own research and writing of this fantastic book! \nAbout the book: Charlotte Brontë had a life as seemingly dramatic as her heroine Jane Eyre. Turning her back on her tragic past\, Charlotte reinvented herself as an acclaimed author\, a mysterious celebrity\, and a passionate lover. Doing so meant burning many bridges\, but her sudden death left her friends and admirers with more questions than answers. Tasked with telling the truth about Brontë’s life\, her friend\, the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell\, uncovered secrets of illicit love\, family discord\, and professional rivalries more incredible than any fiction. The result\, a tell-all biography\, was so scandalous it was banned and rewritten twice in six months—but not before it had given birth to the legend of the Brontës. Through evaluating key events as well as introducing new archival material into the story\, The Invention of Charlotte Brontë presents a different\, darker take on one of the most famous women writers of the nineteenth century\, showing Charlotte to be a strong but flawed individual.. \nAbout the Presenter: Graham Watson is a specialist in the Brontës and Elizabeth Gaskell\, and he is currently researching Victorian literary identities at the University of Glasgow. He has published a number of papers in Brontë Studies and has recently joined the journal’s peer-review board. This is his first book. Graham lives in Glasgow.

DESCRIPTION:Join ethnomusicologist Jean Ngoya Kidula for an illuminating colloquium examining the transformation of the seben — a musical section and practice that emerged within Congolese rumba and has historically been associated with secular\, and often stigmatized\, dance culture. This talk explores how and why the seben has been integrated into contemporary African and diasporic Christian worship\, reshaping its meaning within “praise and worship” contexts. \nThrough this discussion\, Kidula will consider how the sanctification of the seben affirms\, troubles\, and transforms Western frameworks for understanding African artistic expression\, while also interrogating renewed artistic practices and interpretations of Christianity in contemporary Africa. \nJean Ngoya Kidula\, Professor of Music (Ethnomusicology) at the University of Georgia\, is a leading scholar of African and African diasporic music. Her research spans African musicology\, gospel music in Africa and Sweden\, African-American religious music\, and composition across Africa and the diaspora. She is also an active performer and director of an African Music Ensemble.

As time has passed the size and the power of the Executive Branch have increased with more and more responsibility residing on that one person. All presidents have support staffs that they rely on to help make decisions. When the president is ill whose interests take precedence? The president who may have other issues or may be in denial? His staff who may be sacrificing their power? The citizens and the rest of the world who depend on a stable executive running the United States government? DESCRIPTION:In 1659\, the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Colony banned by law the celebration of Christmas as it was deemed to be a time of seasonal excess with no Biblical authority. Though repealed in 1681\, it would not be until 1856 that Christmas Day became a state holiday in Massachusetts. \nIn his book on Christmas Traditions in Boston\, Anthony Sammarco outlines the celebration (or lack thereof) of Christmas in the first two centuries after the city was settled in 1630. By the mid-19th century a German immigrant named Charles Follen introduced the Christmas tree to Boston\, and shortly thereafter Louis Prang introduced his colorful Christmas cards\, the first in Boston. SUMMARY:Wingmasters: North American Birds of Prey (Ages 6+)
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about birds of prey at the library! Our friends from Wingmasters will be joining us for their New England Birds of Prey presentation. Birds of prey are also known as raptors\, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means “to seize”). Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks\, falcons\, and owls\, and this presentation\, which incorporates 4-5 LIVE birds of prey\, all native to New England\, gives an overview of these different categories. The program will explain predation\, the birds’ place at the top of the food web\, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Because many birds of prey are declining in number\, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that Wingmasters cares for\, and explains why these species face an uncertain future. \nWingmasters is a partnership of two people dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their private center in Leverett\, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild\, but in some cases the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these nonreleasable raptors\, and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994\, Wingmasters has presented over 10\,000 programs at schools\, libraries\, and museums throughout New England. \nFor the safety of everyone–including the birds–the birds will NOT be flown or touched by program attendees. \nPlease note: this program is for children ages 6+. It is not appropriate for children under 6. \nRegistration is required\, and anyone who intends on watching the presentation MUST register\, including adults. If more than 1 adult will be attending\, please add extra adults as “children” in the registration form. \nThis program is a part of the Flight Path project\, a collaboration between STARnet (a division of the Space Science Institute)\, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios\, and the Medford Public Library. Flight Path brings science-backed solutions for libraries and their communities to take action towards building a safer world for birds. DESCRIPTION:The city of Medford and Medford High School have produced many great athletes over the years\, both boys and girls\, track stars\, hockey players\, Olympians\, and more. Bill Monbouquette\, MHS 1955\, and former Red Sox All-Star pitcher\, is near to the top of that list. Mombo\, who was inducted into the Mustang Hall of Fame\, played soccer\, hockey\, and baseball in high school\, and it was in baseball that he rose to the highest of professional achievements. \nBill first appeared on the national baseball stage in 1954 at age-17\, between his junior and senior years at Medford High. At that time\, and for many years before and after\, the Hearst Newspapers sponsored a national contest of the best players throughout the US playing at the New York Giants Polo Grounds against the New York City schoolboy all-stars. Bill represented Massachusetts\, pitched two scoreless innings\, and he was named the tournament’s most valuable player! \nHis Hearst All-Star game heroics were followed by: \n\nSigning with the Boston Red Sox right after graduation from Medford High in 1955;\nWorking his way through the Red Sox minor league system from 1955 to June 1958;\nJoining the Red Sox in July 1958\, earning AL All-Star honors in 1960\, 1962 and 1963\, tossing a no-hitter in 1962 to go with 92 wins during 7 ½ Red Sox years through 1965;\nBeginning in 1966 pitching for the Tigers\, Yankees\, and Giants before retiring in 1968;\nBecoming a pitching coach in the minors and majors that lasted from 1969 to 2005!\n\nThose are just some of his many impressive statistics and achievements during a 50-year professional baseball career. But the story we will tell is of Bill the family guy\, the loyal friend\, the best possible teammate and mentor\, a tireless volunteer with the Jimmy Fund\, and Mombo the good neighbor who always made sure that people knew he was from Medford\, MA. \nIt’s a story worth telling and listening to! In the 18th century\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters was home to the largest slaveholding family in Massachusetts and the enslaved Africans who made their lavish way of life possible. Today\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters is a museum whose architecture\, household items\, archaeological artifacts\, and programs bear witness to intertwined stories of wealth and bondage\, set against the backdrop of America’s quest for independence. The Slave Quarters is the only remaining such structure in the northern United States\, and the Royall House is among the finest colonial-era buildings in New England.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate and support freedom of expression with a special Teach-In at the Medford Public Library featuring local authors who will read/perform short sections from banned or controversial books like “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury\, “1984” by George Orwell\, “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood\, “Maus” by Art Spielgelman\, and “The Trial” by Franz and others. Each author will briefly reflect on why these books continue to resonate. Readers include Medford Poet Laureate Vijaya Sundaram\, incoming Medford Poet Laureate Max Heinegg\, poet and professor Julia Lisella\, and Stephanie Schorow\, author of nine books on Boston history. The final speaker will be Christina L. Dobbs\, associate professor at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development\, who will speak on book banning through the United States. The event will include audience participation and refreshments.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the Medford Public Library’s 150th Anniversary Celebration\, historian Dee Morris presents the talk\, “The Mansion on High Street: A History.” In 1875\, the Magoun family sold their mansion to the Town of Medford for $1. The town pledged to use it “for the purpose of a free public circulating library with a free public Reading Room and Art Gallery.” The building served as the Medford Public Library until 1957. Morris will share great stories about the legendary Magouns\, their spectacular gift\, and the vibrant people of our community. Registration is required through the library’s online calendar. \nAlso in conjunction with the library’s anniversary\, Morris will lead a walking tour of the neighborhood at 10 a.m. on three Saturdays — June 14\, July 19\, and September 20. SUMMARY:Royall House Tours Opening Day
DESCRIPTION:The Royall House & Slave Quarters reopens today for its 2025 tour season. The museum will offer guided tours at 1\, 2 and 3 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday through mid-October. Admission for guided tours of the mansion is $15 for adults\, and $10 for seniors and students. Admission is always free for Royall House & Slave Quarters members; for children age 12 and under; for Massachusetts Teachers Association members and retirees; and for active duty military personnel and their families. Admission to the Slave Quarters\, which also houses the archaeological exhibit\, gift shop\, and restrooms\, is free of charge. No reservations are required for groups of fewer than 10 people. Groups of 10 or more are considered group tours and must have a reservation. Visit the Group Tours page on the RHSQ website for group rates and scheduling. \nIn the 18th century\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters was home to the largest slaveholding family in Massachusetts and the enslaved Africans who made their lavish way of life possible. Today\, the Royall House & Slave Quarters is a museum whose architecture\, household items\, archaeological artifacts\, and programs bear witness to intertwined stories of wealth and bondage\, set against the backdrop of America’s quest for independence. The Slave Quarters is the only remaining such structure in the northern United States\, and the Royall House is among the finest colonial-era buildings in New England.

SUMMARY:The American Revolution: Catalyst for Fundamental Changes
DESCRIPTION:The Medford Historical Society & Museum presents a program at the library\, “The American Revolution: Catalyst for Fundamental Changes\,” with historian James Bennett. Did Medford have an American Revolution? The city’s  experience of the American Revolution as a war is a well-documented and proud chapter of the community’s history. But to what extent was there a revolution in the hearts and minds of Medford’s people of the kind that John Adams described in 1918 when he wrote: “But what do We mean by the American Revolution? Do We mean the American War? The Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the Minds and Hearts of the People.” \nIn this presentation\, James Bennett will examine late 18th-century primary sources from Medford to shed light on the fundamental nature of how the people of Medford experienced political change during the tumultuous years of the revolutionary and early national periods. For Medford\, was the American Revolution simply a war to remove royal authority from the apex of their political system\, or was it a catalyst for a much more fundamental change in the values of their political system as a whole? This presentation will point to some possible answers to that question\, and spark conversations in the community about what that historical experience 250 years ago means for us today. \nBennett has worked as a public historian\, researcher\, actor\, and teacher for over 25 years. He currently works as a research fellow for Revolutionary Spaces\, the nonprofit that stewards Boston’s Old State House and Old South Meeting House. \nRegister using the library’s online calendar. \n
