DESCRIPTION:We’re at it again! We keep having so much fun with Loretta and Susan that we had to keep bringing them back for encore performances. And\, this time\, they are focusing on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. They are so knowledgeable about the everyday lives of people who lived through this era as well as how war could upend those lives. We know that\, as always\, we’ll have a great conversation and learn so much about how this historic happening affected every aspect of people’s lives. \n  \nYou know them as the Two Nerdy History Girls – authors Loretta Chase and Susan Holloway Scott were the originators of the infamous blog. We\, once again\, have Loretta and Susan here to answer all of our burning questions about the 250th. How do they do their research\, how much of it comes out of their visits to Colonial Williamsburg\, and how do they incorporate their knowledge into their writing? We can’t wait for what we know is going to be a fascinating conversation between these two friends and researchers. \n  \nClick here to register for this program! \nAbout the presenters: \nLoretta Chase has worked in academe\, retail\, and the visual arts\, as well as on the streets—as a meter maid—and in video\, as a scriptwriter. She might have developed an excitingly checkered career had her spouse not nagged her into writing fiction. Her bestselling historical romances\, set in the Regency and Romantic eras of the early nineteenth century\, have won a number of awards\, including the Romance Writers of America’s RITA® and Vivian®. SUMMARY:Medford in Motion: Local History Walking Tour at Haines Square and Fellsway West
DESCRIPTION:Come on a walking tour with local historian Dee Morris to learn more about the history of Medford in Motion! \nWe will gather at Haines Square\, one of Medford’s busiest business districts\, and then go on to explore Fellsway West\, a wide parkway completed in 1898. Leading to the Middlesex Fells Reservation\, the historic road provided an ideal venue for the Fellsway Driving Club to race their horse-drawn sleighs. This neighborhood also embraced blue collar workers such as Waldimir Kashtaniuk\, a chocolate maker\, and Nathan B. Levine\, a street car operator born in Lithuania. Fellsway West had everything that hard-working men and women could desire: convenience\, affordability and access to nature. \nMeeting Place: \nMeet at the beautiful Haines Square mural on the Fellsway Theatre building next to the large parking lot abutting Target\, Walgreens and Flash Fitness Gym on Salem Street. SUMMARY:Celebrating America's 250th: "The Escapes of David George" with Gregory E. O'Malley (Zoom Program)
DESCRIPTION:When most Americans think of slavery\, they do not picture the colonial or revolutionary eras. Yet\, in fact\, one of six inhabitants of the thirteen original colonies was enslaved. The Escapes of David George: an Odyssey of Slavery\, Freedom\, and the American Revolution reveals a remarkable\, untold experience of the American revolutionary period—a Black man’s quest for the freedom espoused by our Founders\, but denied him and other enslaved people. \nIn 1762\, at the age of 19\, David George escaped from a plantation in Virginia. Running southwest by night\, fording rivers and crossing borders\, he embarked on a decades-long journey in and out of captivity that spanned multiple colonies and thousands of miles. George lived among White\, Black\, Creek\, and Natchez settlements\, fled to the British Army for the promise of liberty\, founded what might have been the first Black Baptist church\, helped to hack a settlement for refugees out of the Nova Scotia wilderness\, and died as a leader of an experimental anti-slavery community in Sierra Leone. \nPiecing together archival records and David George’s own brief account of his life—the earliest written testimony by a fugitive enslaved person in North America—Gregory O’Malley presents a thrilling narrative and a unique perspective on our nation’s origins\, principles\, and contradictions. \nClick here to register for this program!
