SUMMARY:Panel: Fashion Forward
DESCRIPTION:Since the early 1990s\, Beverly Semmes has created installations and sculptures of enormous dresses—some reaching over three-stories high\, others taking over entire gallery spaces.  Since those early days\, her relationship with fashion has grown and deepened—from sculptures and installations to an ongoing collaboration with fashion designer Jennifer Minniti—CarWash Collective—that creates wearable garments cut and patterned with Semmes’s images. \nJoin us for an open conversation with Semmes\, Jennifer Minniti\, and fashion curator Michelle Finamore\, moderated by Lynne Cooney about the intersection of fashion and art. \nRegister and learn more here.

SUMMARY:Beverly Semmes: Boulders / Flag / Flip / Kick Artist Conversation + Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public conversation at 6PM at TUAG / Medford (Aidekman Arts Center) with exhibiting artist Beverly Semmes\, exhibition curator TUAG Director Dina Deitsch\, and Camilo Alvarez followed by a reception celebrating the exhibition. \nTufts/SMFA alumna Beverly Semmes (BA/BFA ’82) has built an extensive practice in sculpture\, painting\, film\, performance\, and fashion that probes the paradoxes and complexities of the body and its representation. Best known for her oversized dress sculptures\, begun in the early 1990s—followed by her FRP (Feminist Responsibility Project) series of over-painted pornographic images and clay sculptures—Semmes has played with the scale\, exposure or covering\, and abstraction of the female form for over three decades. \nYou can RSVP and learn more here.

SUMMARY:Community Reception: "How do you throw a brick through the window..."
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at TUAG / Boston for a community-wide reception to celebrate How do you throw a brick through the window…\, coming up in just over two weeks! \nHow do you throw a brick through the window… features the work of seven artists—Yani aviles\, Chloe P. Crawford\, Nat Decker\, Jeff Kasper\, Carly Mandel\, Jeffrey Meris\, and Libby Paloma—who engage the radical questioning of Korean American writer\, artist\, and musician Johanna Hedva: “How do you throw a brick through the window of a bank if you can’t get out of bed?” to explore how individuals with individuals with disabilities\, chronic illnesses\, and neurodivergence navigate forms of protest despite the normalization of ableism in public spaces. \nLearn more about the event and RSVP using the links below: \nCOMMUNITY RECEPTION\nThursday\, September 4\n6–8PM\n230 Fenway / SMFA at Tufts \nRegister for the Community Reception here. \nThe exhibition is co-organized by Laurel V. McLaughlin and Tanya Gayer in dialogue with the artists. \nThe accompanying symposium for HDYTB and pre-exhibition programming at TUAG were supported by a curatorial research fellowship from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for Laurel V. McLaughlin. Access for programming support for the exhibition is provided by an anonymous donor.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Michelle Schapiro - Something Other Than
DESCRIPTION:The June art exhibition at the Medford Public Library is “Something Other Than\,” a collection of portraits by photographer Michelle Schapiro of LGBTQ+ adults who are a part of the richness of all communities. A 2024 poll revealed that roughly 7.6% of American adults identify as\nsomething other than cisgender heterosexual. Schapiro is a white\, queer\, cis woman whose identities inform a lot of her professional priorities; she makes photos that recognize the beauty in our intersecting identities and don’t cater to just one group. The photo exhibit will be on display in the second-floor gallery all month during regular hours. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Artists Reception: SMFA at Tufts MFA Thesis Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Tufts University Art Galleries presents a reception with the 14 graduating Masters of Fine Arts students from the School of The Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts whose work is featured in exhibition “Through Shifting Lenses.” The exhibition invites audiences to traverse a kaleidoscopic series of shifting perspectives on space\, time\, identity and imagination. Bringing together works that span scale\, mediums and multitudes\, these artists compose a picture of thoughtful invention and unbridled enthusiasm for the making of new worlds in the face of uncertainty. They confront an anxious present with work that snaps with tension between oscillating frameworks: microscopic and vast\, universal and individual\, reflective and speculative. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday\, May 18. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, Tuesday through Sunday. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Chris Rose - Surrealist Art Show
DESCRIPTION:This month’s art exhibition at the Medford Public Library is “Surrealist Art Show” featuring the work of Chris Rose\, a painter and visual artist from\nMedford. Although in his art practice he draws mainly from life\, for this show Rose has brought together a selection of works that are abstract\,\nnon-representational\, or surreal. They were made over a span of years\, with different methods and meanings in mind\, rather than as part of a series. They are unified by a delight in lateral thinking and a belief that art can communicate ideas that could not be conveyed through language alone. Rose’s work will be on display in the library’s second-floor gallery throughout March during regular library hours. \n  \n
