SUMMARY:Rehearsal as Research: “Japanese Tea Ceremony” in Practice and in Performance
DESCRIPTION:Rehearsal as Research: “Japanese Tea Ceremony” in Practice and in Performance\nIn contemporary Japanese Tea (chanoyu\, chado\, or “Japanese tea ceremony”)\, practitioners learn to distinguish between “practice” in the sense of rehearsal\, as carried out in weekly recurring sessions with an instructor versus what is often called “real tea\,” corresponding to the sense of performance\, the public culmination of rehearsal. Despite the seeming primacy of the “real” Performance\, most practitioners end up spending the vast majority of the time they spent doing tea in rehearsal\, not in performance. Of course\, such a divide is also fundamental to theater practice as well\, and paying more attention to what is learned in each format and where scholars derive their knowledge of the whole practice may open new insights into where and how performative norms like “identity” and “culture” are maintained\, perpetuated\, and evolve. \nMichelle Liu Carriger\, PhD has been studying the Urasenke tradition of chado (“tea ceremony”) since 1999\, in various locations including Los Angeles\, Colorado\, Kansas\, Boston\, London\, and in Kyoto during a yearlong Midorikai fellowship at the Urasenke Gakuen Professional College of Chado. She holds a second degree Urasenke teaching license and chamei (tea name) “Somi.” Additionally\, she researches and writes academically on tea practice and theory and spent two years in rural Ehime prefecture\, Japan\, studying in the Omotesenke lineage.

SUMMARY:World Poetry Salon
DESCRIPTION:Learn about modern poetry with short poems from some of the most celebrated writers of the twentieth century. We’ll listen to or read the poems\, share initial impressions\, and discuss whatever questions or themes emerge. The texts will be provided at the meeting—no homework required! \nIn April\, we’ll feature a special New England edition of the salon\, in connection with the Springward Poetry Festival— Ruth Stone of Vermont and Philip Booth of Maine. \nThis free salon-style series welcomes everyone—whether you’re well-versed in poetry or simply curious. Drop in for one session or all; each 90-minute meetup stands on its own. Prior experience with poetry will be helpful but isn’t required. An interest in innovative techniques\, tolerance for ambiguity\, and appreciation of different points of view will also be helpful. \nEmphasis will be given to poets who bore witness to social upheaval and shaped modern literature with their responses to historical events. We will take a global perspective and include many writers in different languages who have been translated into English. Brief introductions to the poets will be offered\, but no stuffy lectures; we’ll make connections and discoveries together through our sharing of questions and observations. \nHosted by Gary Roberts\, a poet and co-founder of Arts Collaborative Medford\, as part of our literary arts initiative. Bring your coffee\, tea\, or notebook and join us for a relaxed\, open conversation about how poetry can reflect\, resist\, and reimagine the world around us.

SUMMARY:MHSM: Clippership Connector
DESCRIPTION:Learn about The Mystic River Master Plan from 2009\, the larger Mystic River Greenway\, the community-driven effort to initiate the project\, and the design\, permitting and construction process that led to what we see today. The Clippership Connector is a new\, half-mile multi-use path in Medford\, MA\, that connects Medford Square to Riverbend Park and the existing Mystic River Greenway system. It provides a safe and scenic off-street route for pedestrians and cyclists\, linking over 10 miles of contiguous paths between the square\, Andrew/McGlynn Schools\, and the parks along the Mystic River. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and the City of Medford. \nSpeaker: Amber Christoffersen\, Greenways Planner/Designer\, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation

SUMMARY:Stuck / Landowner / Pew Pew – Live at Deep Cuts
DESCRIPTION:Three bands\, one night\, and no intention of keeping things quiet. Stuck\, Landowner\, and Pew Pew bring a stacked lineup of angular indie rock\, post-punk energy\, and experimental edge to Deep Cuts. \nExpect sharp guitars\, off-kilter rhythms\, and sets that lean into tension\, texture\, and momentum. Each act pushes in a different direction\, but the throughline is clear: loud\, smart\, and built for a room that’s paying attention.
